LIFE-SAVING AT FIRES.
We have been asked to reprint the lot* lowing which appeared some time ago In the v Wellington Post ": —Oat, aUcntfott has been called to a very Important : resolution passed at the reseat F/re Brigade Conference m Dunodin. This iru to the effect that at future compatitlons prf2?i and certificates! should ba effired for the best exhibits of life-reaving Apparatus. At the present time m New Zealand there can be no question that too little alten* Mori ia paid to those useful appliances to which, m crowded cities especially, so many people annually owe their lives. The ordinary fire esoape, and a few ropes coiled inside the opper windows of some of oar hotels, constitute, we believe, the whole of tbo life-saving apparatus to be found m Wellington. Inventors could not exercise their brains to * nobler purpone, and we allude to the subject now because the 12 months, or nearly co, wh'ch will elapse before the next competition will be held, should afford plenty of time for good ideas to be envolved and elaborated. The Fire Brigades Association, m stimulating researoh m auoh humanitarian field of enquiry, is doing an excellent work whloh is worthy of all commendation, and wa hope to see It taken op far and wide. Thare are busy brains and willing hands m New Zealand 'to conceive and to contrive, and we now indicate one direction m which geaias"and energy may find • worthy outlet. Captain Mitchell, of the Port Chalmers Brigade, is president of the «ssoolation, and Mr J. G. Gilbert, sub-auperintondant of the Napier Fire Brigade la secretary. Either of these gentlemen, if written to, will be happy to supply any information which may be desired on the subject;
