Inventors could not exercise their brains to * nobler purpone, and we allude to the subject now because the 12 months, or nearly co, wh'ch will elapse before the next competition will be held, should afford plenty of time for good ideas to be envolved and elaborated. The Fire Brigades Association, m stimulating researoh m auoh humanitarian field of enquiry, is doing an excellent work whloh is worthy of all commendation, and wa hope to see It taken op far and wide. Thare are busy brains and willing hands m New Zealand 'to conceive and to contrive, and we now indicate one direction m which geaias"and energy may find • worthy outlet. Captain Mitchell, of the Port Chalmers Brigade, is president of the «ssoolation, and Mr J. G. Gilbert, sub-auperintondant of the Napier Fire Brigade la secretary. Either of these gentlemen, if written to, will be happy to supply any information which may be desired on the subject;
