A SINGULAR INVENTION.
A Sydney paper has the following :— "Everything now la Jubilee! Jabilee shoes, stockings, every mortal requisite ; seeing which, with commendable dieoern> ment, a Mr Walter Greenshlelds, of New Zealand, ii applying In this colony for a fatent for what he terms 'A Jabilee ipa and Olgar Holder.' The idea la novel And olever, and one which will be welcomed by that very numerous olaes, * the smQkers.' This invention la described as follows :— For example, T take • piece of glass toblng such as is used for steam gauges, say about tw,o inohes long, and about an inoh m diameter. I fit a cork into eaoh end of the tube, the corks projecting about half an inoh past the ends of the tube, bo as to be easily tightened or taken out. Holes are bored m eaoh cork, at one end to fit the stem near the mouthpiece, the other to fit the stem near the bowl of the pipe, the stem or lhank of the pipe being In two pieces. lUoh end of the Btem projects about a quarter of an inoh past the Inner end of •aoh cork, then, whqn smoking, the noxious fumes of the tobacco are con* denied and retained m . the glass until cleaned. Cotton wodl as a filter, and soent, mediolnal or other* wise, may also be used m the glast* so as to purify and perfume the smoke j Glass being transparent, is easily seen when dirty, and being non-absorbent, fa tMdily oleaned, while oork, being a ncn« oondnotor of heat, there is no danger of eanoer from a hot or dirty pipe, and no neoessitv for spitting. The glass may t« dfanyitlSOj shape or oolor, and initead if cork, rubber or other suitable material may be nsed as a stopper to connect the stem of .the pipe to the glass ; or the ■topper may be attaohed to the outside of the glass instead of the inside as described . Also the mouthpiece of a olgar holder or the stem of a pipe may b 3 fitted direot Into the end of the glacs ; but m either MM it should pro jest inside m suoh a manner as to prevent the nicotine as it •ondinott from running out of the glass Into the mouthpiece. What I claim as an ttpeeial novelty is the r:e of a hollow glass on the stem of a tob oco pipe or a olgar holder as above described, for the purpow of intercepting and condensing the poisonous fames of tobacco, and preventing nicotine from reaching the month Of the smoker."
