DROWNING CASE.

Napier, May 24.

A young man named Joseph Williams, a sign writer, was drowned at Clive today. He formed one of a party of sixteen Raval Volunteera who took out the Navala* boat, and sailed from Napier for Olive. In croßsing for Ngaruroro the sea struck the boat, breaking four oars and. pitching Williams overboard. The bar was shallow, and he was seen to recover his feet, but a breaker came m and carried the boat on thirty yards, sweeping Williams away. The boat was beached, and several volunteers endeavoured to render aid at the peril of their lives, Williams' brother having a very narrow escape, being saved by two companions, who entered the surf with a rope. The body has not yet been recovered.
