A ROMANCE OF THE SEA
Something savoring of a romance attaches itself to the schooner Srea Pas Sair, one of thoee wrecked by the recent hurricane on western Australia. The Sree Pas Sair— which m the Malay language signifies Iho Belle of the Sea — was owned by Messrs Siroefcer (well-known jewellers), Chippendale (late a lieutenant m H.M. Navy), and Haynea. For some time she wn engaged lv the pearl fishery on the coast of New Galnea, where she was eminently successful. The berri-borri fever broke out on board, a number of the 1 ands left, and f n consequence tr 3 vessel went away to the fishing ground on the no; h-w stern coaßt of Australia. While there rhe wn joined by Mr Streator, juu., son of one of the owners, Mr Chippendale being m command end Mr Hayne3, the third partner, being also on board.. In the latter part cf last year young Strce';er was taken "I of fever, and went to Perth, whe r e he subsequently died. Mr Chippendale shortly afterwards had a sunstroke, f;om the effects of whioh he died* Soon aftar this a mutiny occurred on board the r jhooner, and one of the Malay seamen who had threatened violence waa bound to tho wheel by the order of H&ynes, who wtis then m commr id. An hour or two after tLis, whllit Haynes was lying m his bunk, the bound Malay managed to escaped from his fasten* ings, went into the ciblD, and with a deeps:.-, lead struck Haynes, who was asleep, a fearful blow on the forehead, orusbing through the frontal bone, breaking his noae, fid inflicting other terrible wounds. The Malay thought his victim dead, as be lay Btl'i and apparently lifeless, but, strange to say, he came round, losing both the senses of tr^te and smell. Being m a weak state he went to England fur medical treatment, and to the astonishment of the doctors he recovered. One of the leading 1 mdoa surgeons specially asked Mr Haynas to bequeath to him his skull, sa he could not understand how a man oould live with such terrible wounds. The cime firm own, besides the Sree Paß Sair, the schooner Telephone and about forty boats aud dtDgies.— Sydney ' Telegraph. 1 ___
