A FESTIVE VILLAGE
Some mlnera on. strike m Lanarkshire wanting something to do to p&aa the time held a mass meeting m Hamilton. Some of them on their way home through the village of Stonefield, eight miles from Glasgow, broke opon a number of shops and helped themselves. The chief bo re m the place w?s closed against them, but they got m, a&d the inhabitants of the village thought they might aa well share In the pot-luck that was going. Provisions of all kinds were carried away, as well as barrels of whisky and brandy, and a quantity of wino m bottles. The liqucra were dealt round m pails, jelly jara, and indeed m any available vessel, to men, women, and children; while the goods were handed out and carried away m loads. Next morning the orgiu wa« resumed, and a barrel of brandy and a ladle out m the street was the centre of attraction, A detachment of ooiiatables appeared, capsized the liquor, and then begun to lay the wreckers by the heols, and soon had seventy of them handcuffed. But the villagers had stowed away six months' store of small goods and spirits before the policeman arrived.
