The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, MAY 21, 1887. A GOOD SUGGESTION.

A correspondent, whose letter appears m another column, asks if something cannot bo done to establish an Industrial Association m Ashburton, or to resuscitate an institution of the kind which formerly existed. There can be . no doubt that the idea is a good one. He claims that it was with the Association which existed here some years ago the idea of establishing a Woollen Factory originated. As we all know, the Woollen Factory has been establised, and regarding the benefit the whole district derives, directly and indirectly, through having such an industry m full swing m our midst there can be no two opinions. And doubtless the Association to which our correspondent alludes, accomplished much good work m other directions but somehow or other it gradually . passed out of existence and was ranked with the "have beens." This is much to be regretted, but the same sort of thing has occurred elsewhere. But Associations of the nature m question are not, necessarily, doomed to die of ' desuetude-— we know of very many cases m which it is far otherwise j where those institutions as time went on ( have increased m importance and with corresponding power of benefiting those interests which they had taken upon themselves to watch over. We do hope that our correspondent's > J suggestion will be acted upon; and that steps will be at once taken to form a strong Association here. If proper care be taken m regard to management, and if members have an interest m the work before them, there need be no fear that the body will fall to pieces, as,in consequence of apathy and neglect, has too often, unfortunately, been the case, where such Associations have, been formed.
