Fire. Wellington, May 21. A Fire broke out at Thornton's confeotlonery mauufaotory at 1 30 this morning, a strong southerly gale was blowing, but the Brigade managed to subdue the flames but not before considerable damage was done. The building and stook were insured for £150 m the National, and the estimated lobb sbf stook by fire and water is £600. Importation of Stock Dukedin, May 21. A meeting of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to oonsider a memorandum received from the Oommlttee appointed by the House of Representatives with reference to the suggested removal of the prohibition of the importation of stock from England. There was a large attendanoe, and it was unanimously resolved that the time has arrived when the prohibition on the importation of cattle, sheep and horseß from the United Kingdom and America may be safely removed, and that the Government be requested to give effeot to the same if the other colonies aot similarly. * mf =====
