LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mails for the United Kingdom, eto., via 3^n Francisco will close at Ashburton Post * ckfice on Friday next, 20th instant, at 5.m. qi Money orders will be issued up to 10 a.m. to As will be seen from an advertisement m lc another part of this issue, the Boselle Bros.' 01 Surprise Party intend playing m the Town 0 | Hall, Bakaia, on Tuesday next (Queen's bi Birthday). The Company have been well T received wherever they have played, and ' should meet with a good reoeption at Bakaia. w Some person or persons committed a das- k tardly act on Monday evening. Lieutenant b Muller went over to the rifle range m charge tl of a squad to do some shooting, and found ° that the Bines' store behind the butts had ° been broken open, the padlock wrenohed from the woodwork, and even the panels pi Q the door broken m pieoes. The seat, etc., m the marker's butt was also torn from a position and smashed m several pieoes, and s rope, wire, etc., attached to the flag pole torn down. This is not the first time this kind . of thing has ooourred, and it is high time the police took the matter m hand. Some one j had evidently also had a spade trying to clear ] away the sod work from the marker's butt, i Considering the amount of money our Volunteers have spent on the range it is a great ' shame that some person or persons should ' thus behave, and as the Eiflea have determined to offer a reward for the deteotion of , the perpetrators we hope the offender will be found, At the meeting held yesterday of the Committee m connection with the celebration of the Queen's Jubilee, the motion brought forward at the recent public meeting was adopted as follows: — "That the preaen* Library building be extended for the purpose of establishing an Industrial Museum to bo devoted to tho exhibition of the geological and other specimens already m tho hands of the oustodian, also for displaying samples, of the agricultural and pastoral, mineral, and other productions of the town and country, as well as providing meeting accommodation for farmers and others interested m the development of the resources of the district, at a cost not exoeeding £500." A subscription list was passed round the room and about £80 collected. The next meeting of the Committee will be held on Saturday afternoon. Thiß morning the Secretary pro tern' received a letter from Mr W. C. Walker, M.H.B. m which that gentleman stated that he would extend his hearty co-operation towards any mode of celebration the Committee might deoide upon. We have been desired to call the attention of the public to the clearing sale whioh -will be held by Mr P. Williams (for Meßsrs Friedlander Bros.) at Mr H; Kennedy's farm, Elgin, to-morrow, at twelve o'clock. A case of stabbing ooourred at Pattern's Hotel, Methven, on Tuesday night. The alleged facts are as follows :— Daring the day two men, named JamesJMurray and Joseph Hoskett, bad a quarrel, and it is said that some time afterwards Murray was heard making a remark that he would wait his time. After Hoskett had gone to bed Murray went up stairs ito the]lformer's room and stabbed him under the chin with a table* knife. The wound is not a serious one. Murray was brought up at the B.M. Court this morning, before Mr H. Friedlander, J.P., and remanded till Monday. Tha Caledonian Sooiety gave their first •' lngleside " meeting for the season last night m the Oddfellows' Hall. There was an unwontedly large attendance of members and their lady friends, with also, a good number of the bairns. The programme was of the usual sort— a dance and a song — a Btep dance and a reel— a song and another dance, eto, until supper time, when the inner man rofr«&ed the members " till 't again," and « chased the glowing hours with flying feet." There was " routh o' bonnie lasses " at the meeting and the lads who were there had a happy time, while the old people fanoied themselves young again when the strathspeys and reels " put life and mettle m their heels." The danoe programme was , managed by Mr Charles Beid, while Mr 2 Kneen saw to the musical part of the work - aided by the Sooiety ■' am pet oe," Miss Kidd, i Messrs Atkinson, Gates, and Simpson contrib uted songs m their usual style, as did also f Miss Kidd and Mrs Maclean Dunn, while Mr 5 T. MoKay, (Mr A. MaoKay's sncoeßsor) " gae > a skirl on the pipes " to the Scotch dancing. ; Messrs T. McKay, Gallic, and Morrison 1 contributed Scotoh step dances— all doing > their work m Highland costume. The > supper table, supplied by the hospitality, of i several of the country members was presided ' over by Mesdames Maolean Dann, Carter, I Kneen, and Lamb, and at " orowdie time," - those ladies were perhaps the most popular m * the building. Altogether the night was a f most enjoyable one, and "that hoor, o' " nioht's black arch the keystaine" brought ■ out the friendly strains of " Auld Langsyne" I and sent everybody home an hour and a half I latbr than the orthodox " elders Soor." i A general meeting of the Ashburton Rifles was held at the Drlillshed last evening. There was a good attendance. Captain [ Dolman, Chairman, explained that through ' oversight the battalion officers, who had been [ promoted from the Company, had not been ' oleoted members. Sergt. Nelson proposed, and Color Sergt. McDonald seconded, that > Major Douglas, Capt. and Adgt. Fooks, and ' Sergt. Major Hayes, be olected life member 8 1 of the Company. Carried unanimously. ' was deoided to send a team to compete m the ! military sports to be held m ChristobfcßQlOfl 1 21 th May. It was deoided that tt& ©Pany should procure the badges for South Canterbury Battalion for all members. After dis- * cussion the determination was oome to not * to subscribe towards the Jubilee fund, the 1 members considering that that they had too ' many calls to meetjatjpresent. The following ' members were eleoted as Shooting Committee i to draw up a shooting soheme for the ensuing year: — Sergeant Nelson, Privates Ash ton, i Sim, MoDonald, and Baker. It was resolved, on {tho motion of Lieut Muller, seoonded by 1 Color-Sergeant MoDonald, " That a Football ' Committee, consisting of Sergt-Major Hayes, I Sergta Fooks and Nelson, Corporal Hitohings, Private Hepburn, and mover, be eleoted." ; Carried. On the motion of Lieut Muller, seconded by Corporal Burfoot, Sergt Fooks was unanimously eleoted Lieutenant. It was I resolved, on the motion of Lieut Muller, and 3 seconded by Private Mullaney, " That the \ company protest against the unmanly and ■ cowardly attack made by the writer of the I letter signed " Argus," m the " Guardian "of 1 the 17th inst." It was also deoided to offer a \ reward for the deteotion of the perpetrators i of }<he malicious damage done to tho butts. * A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the [' meeting. f Mr A. H. Nathan, of Auckland, has reoeived * a telegram from Mr Mitohelson stating that ' there is no ohanoe of the new Tariff Bill '" passing. The Licensed Victuallers' Trade - Protection Association at a meeting on Tuea- * day night protested against the imposition * of the proposed duty.
