Letters were read (1) From Secretary Railway Reform League, Auckland, enclosing a copy of a petition to Parliament m support of Mr Vaile's Bailway Reform Scheme.— The Chairman said he . had looked into it, and had forwarded the following letter, being his own ideas on •. the subject : — :: *&-"-1 May 6th, 1887. F. J. Von Sturmen, Esq., Secretary and Treasurer, Railway Re» form League, Hamilton, Wa'kato, Auckland. Sib,— l have to acknowledge receipt of your circular letter of April last, together with some papers sotting forth certain schemes for the muragement of the traffic on the New Zealand railways. I beg respectfully to say that I have read the several papers, aad they appear to me to contain the most utterly absurd and impracticable propositions imaginable. A3 perhaps the largest user of the railway m the Colony, no one could be more interested m _an economical and accommodating tariff, but as any such scheme aa that proposed by Mr Vaile wou'd reault m such a self-evident loss and chaos I could not support it. If such a scheme were established the consequence would be a los 3of revenue, and also from necessity, increased taxation to make up the deficiency, and such -taxes wou'.dfall on many of our fellow colonists who don't '< make use of the railway. I have the honor to be, Your obedient servant, John Gbigo. The Board considered the scheme mia,' llm, and were unanimously of Mr Grigg's opinion, and approved of his letter. (2) From Mr Bell, manager Ohatmoss Estate, calling the Board's attention to the i bridges on the Boundary Road, and the bad state of porition of the road. The Surveyor was directed to inspeot and report, and m case of necessity have repairs made to bridges. BDRVfiVOK's REPORT The Surveyor's report on various works m (he district was approved. RATE.
