The Sooiety, who will receive the aid of the Orchestral Sooiety, will render Mozart's Twelfth Mass, and also Handel's Dottingen Te Deum. The latter work, whioh is of a very high order, is, we believe, new to Ashburton. It is said the Mikado and the leading statesmen of Japan favor the English langur ge for he official purposes of that country. "Rough on Cobns." — ABk for "Weir "Rough on Corns." A concert under the direotion of the Committee of Management of the Ashburton Olub was held on Thursday evening. Mr P. Tully's tender for ploughing at the County Council's Irrigation Farm has been accepted. We have been $|deßired to remind thoso sheep farmers [whose rates for 1886 are yet unpaid that the Inspeotor, Mr W. &.. P. Sutton, has r«aeivedjordera to sue after the 20th mat. As the amounts m most cases are small, being only a few^Bhilltngs, those whose rates are outstanding] will save themselves much inoonvenienoejby settling promptly. The names of the following gentlemen have, been added to tho Jubiloe Committee:— Messrs E. F. Wright, F. Bishop, J. Small, S. Brot\J, G. Gould, G. Hunt, J. Sargeant, W. L. Allan, A. Maofarlane, J. Grigg, E. M. Goodwin, C. M. Stratohey, J. O. N, Grigg, A. Eoberts, A. H. Shury, R. MoOwen, V. Pyke, Webster, Hons W. S. Peter and J. MoLean. The Representation Bill was considered m Committee m the House last evening. The proceedings were rather acrimonious at times : and but little was done. 1 Publicans m England are being fined heavily right and left for adulterating their • beer with sugar and water. One brewer has 1 thereupon offered a reduction of 8a a barrel J to those of his customers wjio undertake to ' sell the article without any dilution or addi* t tion. The rumour has been prevalent for Lome time that both Sit John Hall and Major " Atkinson will stump the country m the Opposition interest before the elections— the j former as leader of the party, with the veteran . Major for his First Lieutenant. The inquest on the bodies of Capt Set!er» I Waddel, and Brain, tho victims of the I Northumberland disaster, was concluded j yesterday. Noting new was elicited. The - verdict was "Death by acoident while eni" deavouring to save life." The funeral took placo m the afternoon, there being an immense I assembly. The funeral services were conduoted by the Bishop o£ Waiapu, and the p Revs Walsh and Pattorson. The service was ) read during a tremendous down pour of rain. • At tho Police Court, Napier, yesterday, five men, charged with wrecking and stealing , oargo, were brought up and remanded. Other arrests are likely to be made. The agents of the Bhip have sent £21 to the : crews of each steamer. Probably all will be given to the fund being raised for the fam'.lies : of the drowned men. A trial of tho stoam washing machine invented and patented by Mr S. Hardley was ' held ia the Arcado to-doy. C.f lafn thero i have been numerous maobines of this kind ' brought under publio notice, some good and 1 Home otherwise, but Mr Hardley's washer is, ■ wo think, sure to find its way into favor : wherever known. Thoae who were present at ■ the trial to-day were loud m the encomiums 1 of tho manner m whioh it performed its work, and from tho little we saw of its operation, it [ appeared as if it would be a great labor saver m any household, besidos doing its work m a 1 way which conld not well bo beaten. It is unnecessary for us to here describe m detail its mechanism, but suffice it to say that it is exceedingly Bimplo. Steam is led from thecopper m which it is generated to a recep tacle m whioh is placed a cylinder perforated at the ends with a few holes. The clothes to bo operated on go inside the cylinder, whioh is turned by a handle. With a few revolutions of this handle the washing is complete. A few ingenious appliances are oombined with the machine for saving trouble aad inconvenience when manipulating the clothes which are to bo, or have been, washad. Tho Rhode Island Locomotive Works havo oompleted a looomotive for tho New York, Providence, and Boston railroad. It is claimed that this locomotive is tho largest and fastest ever built. It ia designed to run bet* ween Providence and Croton, Conn., and is expected to draw eight oars a cMstanco of 62$ miles m 62J minutes, including a full stop at Mystic drawbridge. Tho weight of the engine is about 95,0001 b. The boiler is 54 inches m diameter, cylinders 18 by 21 inches, driving wheels, 6 feet m diameter ; firebox, 125 inches long and 43 inches wide. It will requiu three tons of hard coal to make the fire before start* ing from the round house. Four tons of ooa and 4000 gallons of water will be caraed m tho tender. The King of the Belgians lately visited the foundry of tho Compagnie leg Bomzea at Brussels, to inspect the Gordon monumeoi Mr Boehm, destined for Westminster Abbey, whioh has been executed at the Compagnie. Thoso present (the " Times " 00: respondent says) thought tho monument both imposing and touohing, and tho execution excellent. General Gordon is represented m a recumbent posture, wrapped m his military oloak, on a black marble sarcophagus, whioh rests on brc.iza claws. The countenance expressos a majestic calm, befitting one who sleeps tho sleep of tho just. Tho monument will shortly be sent to England. The " Grand Old Man " has subscribed £50 to tho sunds of tho Imperial Institute. Tho best medioine known is Sander and Sons' Euoalypti Extract. Test its eminont powerful effects m coughs, oolds, influenza, etc.— the relief is instantaneous. Thousands give tho most gratifying testimony. His Majesty the King of Italy and medical syndicates all ovor the globe are its patrons. Read the official reports that acoompany eaoh bottle. We have no occasion to offer rewards m proof of the genuineness of our references* The official reports of medioal clinics and universities, the official communication of tho Conßul-General for Italy at Molbourno • the diploma awarded International Exhibition, Amsterdam— nil these are authehtio documents, and, as suob, not open to doubt. We add here epitome of one of tho various oases treated at the olinio of Sohultz, M.D., Professor, etc. :— " 0.8., 21 years old j congeational abooss on the thigh. Incisions made m two places. Although Lister's dressing was applied, the Becretion bocame, two days later, very copious, and had adopted a foetid, decomposed character. The temperature rose enormously. In consequence the dressing was removed, and on its place were made during tho day-time repeated irrigations with Eucalypti Extract. The offedßivo footer disappeared very soon, tho fever abated within a few days, and the patient recovered after tho lapse of several weoks. In this instance we must not lose sight oE the fact that the latter, treatment saved tne patient's life,"
