(AIFOBD FOREST CORBESrONDENT.) Lying away from the beaten track of tour.'sta but endowed .with innumerable beauties it the often spoken of, but seldom visited, Lake Heron. A journey on horßebaok or by vehicle up the Mount Somers Gorge m summer time is worth taking, especially when the traveller can always rely upon a wrrra welcome and hoßpitablo treatment from the kindly owner of the station, Mr A. E. Merewether. Not bo long ago a homey thatched homestead reminded one of early days and temporary expedients for shelter ; now a commodious house, finished even to the galvanised roof, speake of progress and improvements ia Bymjnthy with the age. The like itself is remarkable for extent, changing Its snrfaco from mirror-like stillness to tho similitude of tha tempest tossed o. can " when the Btormy winds do bio*," and m its still, moments reflecting the grand mountain aconery of an alp ; ne region. New outbuildings oomp'ete In every detail, including woolshed, cowshed, two shepherds huts, and an outstati'on hut, also proper wool-washlrg ahed, have recently been added, and it may certainly be Bald that the eutorprlaing owner doaerves great pralso for the wonderful ohanges made. Wool from thin wehknown Btatlon has commanded high pricas former/y, but with the recent addition of two thousand two-tcoth wethers lately purchased from the renewed flock of Sir John Hall, stfll more satisfactory results may Ye confidently anticipated. There is rich grazing for cattle round the borders of the vast lake, which Is dotted thickly with wild fowl of every kind, while the waters abound m magnificent trout; A visitor from the tame scenes of the home countiy would imagine Hmbolf transported to another world, when he gazed on the reimrkable glacier i »pr klinj» m the «un, and the other concomitants of a mountainous region.
