ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL

The following business was transacted •fter we went to prest yesterday :~ BBAIN. Mr Meredith Wilson waited on the Council m regard to a drain through his property, which at last meeting of the ' Council Mr S. Wright had applied to have proclaimed a public drain. Mr Wilson contended that such a proceeding would press very unfairly on him, and would result m much damage and loss to him [ if the Council did not take steps to protect his interests. The olauße m the Engineer's report referring to the matter was read to Mr Wilson, who expressed himßelf entirely satisfied with the deoieion come to and withdrew. PAYMENT. The usual monthly accounts were passed for payment, FINANCE. Mr Wright was appointed treasurer ddring the absence of Mr Walker. Messrs MoLean and Wright was appointed to make arrangement with the Bank for the payment of monies on behalf of the Mount homers tramway, till the Council had got the handling of the loan for the purpose from Government. THE UNEMPLOYED. Mr Jackson withdrew his notice of mot'on m regard to the uneraploy&d question THK COUNTY ENGINEER. A letter v»aß read from the Amuri County Council, asking the Council to allow Mr Baxter to visit that County and give his opinion on the subject of irrigation works now being started there, a diversity of opinion existing as to the fensibity of those works. The Council had no objection to Mr Baxter giving his services as desired, provided his duties here allowed him to visit the Amuri. A CLAIM Messrs White, Caygill and Co. , on behalf of Mr John Corbett, of Wakanui, made a claim for £5, damages alleged to have been sustained by their client through a water courao having been taken through his property. The matter was referred to the Engineer and Mr Leadley, the member for the Biding. WHEATSTONE DRAIN. The Longbeach JRoad Beard wrote requesting the Council to take steps to have the Wheatßtone drain cleared out. The Engineer stated that the Council had already cleared out the drain on one occasion, but did not agree to continue maintenance, which would be an annually recurring expense. It was resolved to reply m accordance with the Engineer's statement. MOUNT SOMEBS' TRAMWAY. Mr W. McClimont wrote, agreeing to the Mount Somers Tramway being taken through bis property, provided that the Council would lay about ten chains of sleepers and rails, on his proving that the seam of coal on his property existed m sufficient quantity, and of marketable quality. HldH SCHOOL. The Secretary of the High School Boat a wrote stating that Mr D. McLean had resigned his seat on the High School Board, and requestiag the Council to Dominate a successor. Mr Jackßon was appointed to fill the ▼acanoy, JDBILEE, A letter was read from the Borough Council m regard to the celebration of the Queen s Jubilee. It was decided to fall m with the Borough's suggestion that a public meeting should be called to consider the matter, and Mr Harper waH deputed to attend the meeting on behalf of tho Council. MVBB ENCROACHMENT. The Kangitata Road Board wrote requesting the Council to have the road where the river encroaches near RS. 29819, securely fenced, when the owner oi the seotion fenced the road line. The Board had agreed to the exchange of the road on receipt of the Council's assurance to keep a road open for traffic. BHINGLE PIT. Mr A, W. Smith, Alford Forest, applied for a shingle pit on certain conditions — Granted. CEMETERY. In response to a request from the Crowr Lands department, the Council agreec to accept a delegation of power to appoini trustees m regard to the Mount Someri Cemetery; SLAUGHTERING LICENSE. A slaughtering license to Chas. Doherlj was granted. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. ' Leave of absence to Mr W. C. Walkei during the present session of Farliameui wae granted. IRRIGATION. Petitions praying the Council to constitute irrigation districts were received. FOISONED GRAIN. It was resolved on the motion of Mi Wright, seconded by Mr Coster, that th< sum of £250 be divided among the dif ferent Boad Boards within the County, t< to expended by them m tho dcstruotioi of small birdß. 1)10 TAX. Authority was given the Chairman t< appoint a dog ranger. TENDERS. The tender of R. S. Bean was accept e< for the supply of timber. The Council then adjourned,
