WHAT WAS IT?
A Taranakl paper Bays that coneiderable sensation was caused a few daya ago at one of the country settlements by the report of a wild beast being at large m the neighborhood. The foundation of the report seema to have been that when one evening the little daught&r of one of the. settlers went to bring m the cows she saw m animal, whioh she declared was not a dog or a pig or anything she had ever seen before, but very much resembled a tiger, a picture of v; hich animal she had seen m one of her school books She did not wait to see what became of the animal, but ran home and Informed her father who, wenb with his gun to shoot the animal if possible ; but he could not find any traoe of It, and went about his usual duties, and by bed time he had almost forgotten the incident. However, m the middle of the night the whole household were startled by a great noise, between a howl and a roar, whioh lasted for some time ; and on comparing notes next morning it was found that the noise had been heard at the same time by settlers soma two or three miles off. A Bearoh party was then organised, and act forth with gana to hunt the disturber, but without result, and the mystery Bti'l remains unsolved.
