A DISASTROUS HURRICANE
1 TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFK. [rBUXBR's TELEGRAMS — COPYRIGHT. ] (Received April 20, noon.) Perth, April 20. News has been received of a terrible disaster to the pearling fleet on the north-west . coast. The fleet anchored at 90 mile beach above the Deguly river on the 22nd, when an awful hurricane occurred. A great number of boats were dismasted, many were driven to sea> others being swamped. Scores of expert swimmers trying to reach the shore sank exhausted. Over 40 boats are missing, of which a large proportion sank. Others drifted.to sea dismasted. It is calculated that fully five hundred and fifty white and native pearlers have been drowned. Boats have gone from Cossack with stores searching for the missing boats. One of the survivors says that he saw the schooner Dawn sink with sixty men aboard. The hurricane lasted fully two hours.
