The following are the passengers fox 1 New Zealand : — Mrs Gulthorp, and Mr , Benkin. The following is her summary :— r London, -Maroh 18. t The political events of the past week have k been completely thrown m the shade by the ' serious attempt to assassinate the Ozar on > Sunday last. The news was {first learned ) from a brief oyphex despatch, and all sorts of rumors were current until Wednesday, when ' a full report was first received by mail, all ' telegrams having been, stopped by the 1 authorities at St Petersburg immediately ; after the attempt. Sunday being the anni« versary of the late Czar's murder, the Czar | and Court attended the usual requiem mass ' m the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, where the ftvssian sovereigns lie buried. About two o'clock the Emperor was expeoted to pass along Neoski Prospect, when general consternation was exoited by the police pouncing on several persons whom they had ' evidently been following, and taking them to the police head quarters. It appears tnat ' the plot wa kept absolutely Beoret, the ) police havin no idea of its existence. On Friday, however, the deteotives i noticed several persons loitering about , Neoski Prospect, near the Antfloff palace, and followed them to a tea house, where they carefully deposited three apparently precious paokagea one a large book, another a parcel. ' The movements of these people were reported to the authorities, by whom orders were giveu to keep an eye upon them. On Sunday the/ 1 were followed from their lodgings aoross the Neva to Neoski Prospect, where they were ; arrested, just before the Czar and Czarevitch were about to leave the palace. The would-be assassins had made every preparation to i esoape, and if they had not been arrested m , time, the Czar and Czarevitch would almost oertainly have met with a terrible death, tor the objects the misoreants were so oarefully 1 carrying were dynamite bombs, and the book proved to be a hollow oase containing a bottle of dynanrile surrounded by poisoned bullets 1 filled with arsenic The Czar's horses WCW at once stopped, and his Maiesty drove by another route to the railway station, whence he left) for Gatsohina. The prisoners were all young men, five of them being expelled University students. On -the night following tb.9 attempt, a large number of arreßtß were made m various parts of the capital, including twenty females. The attempt is believed to have been the work of the extreme N.ihilisi section, and is regarded as proof that tl}B Nihilists are asain lieoomin^ <™tive.
