We are requested to call attention to an announcement by Messrs McCallum and Co. of a olearing sale of timber, which will be found m another column.
By the omission of the words " per day " m our " local " respecting the sale of the race privileges, a wrong impression- was given. The amount realised for the different booths, and right of sports and cards should have been £67 10a, instead of £33 15.
• The return of arrivals and departures at the several ports of the colony during Maroh shows the total of arrivals to have been 1286 and departures 1403.
It'is stated by those m a position to know m professional circles that Barnura's circus, tho greatest combination m the world, will visit the colonies some time next year.
During the last 100 years more than 100 Missionary Societies have been formed, and 3000 missionaries are at work m the field, while 3,000,000 oonvertß have been gathered in.'
This year Ashburton Wealeyans will celebrate the anniversary of their ohurch m this distriot under, m one respect, exceptionally, favorable oiroumstances. Services next Sunday will ba conduoted by Eev William Morley, of Dunedin, and on Monday evening the Bey J, J. Lewis, of Ohristohurch, is to deliver a lecture entitled " The British Parliament, and its ex-Premier." Partisans and opponents of the " Grand Old Man " will have an opportunity of comparing notes with 1 the rev locturer, who has chosen a subjeot replete with interest, more especially to [thoße who view with concern the present aspect of Home politics. With two such speakers as the Revds W. Morley and Lewis, and other desiderata m the shape of congenial weather, and suitable music by the choir, the congregation on Sunday and audienoe on Monday evening should be unueaally large.;
At a meeting of the High Sohool Board held at the County Council office yesterday, all the members being present, the question of appointing a headmaster was considered. Seven applications were received, the Board appointing Mr J. E. Buchanan to the position. Ordinary routine business was transacted and the Board adjourned.
The trial of the Zealandia sheep dip postponed on the 13th inst owing to the weather, will take place at the County saleyards on Wednesday, 27th inst.— to-morrow week.
Attention is directed to tbe annouoement m another column of a large and important sale of furniture by Mr J. C. Duncan, on aooount of Mr J. Meecb, who is retiring from business. The sale will be commenced at 11 a.m. on Saturday next at the Arcade, and the various lots will be disposed of without
reserve.
It is the intention of the Native Minister to introduce a Bill to . regulate the Bale of Maori lands to the Government under the pre-emptive right now veßted m the Crown, and to regulate the exercise of such preemptive right,
The Fisk Jubilee Singers visited St Stephen's Native School, Kaiapoi, on Friday ' and heard the children sing. Tho Jubilee Singers gave an example of their powers, and the Maoris presented them with a handsome mat as a token of goodwill.
Up to the present time the various English Companies whioh manufacture ocean cables have constructed 107,000 miles of submarine communication, whioh link all the ohief seaports of the world together. The capital invested m these cables is estimated at more than £37,000,000.
One of the most wonderful developments of feminine self-sacrifice was demonstrated m one hotel m Napier last week. A young lady bar-tender, says the Napier "News," was offered a fifty pound note for a kiss ; she had the note m her possession; but handed it back to the amorous swain, and then deliberately refused a munificent reward for an osoulatory delight. Such a sacrifice, we believe, has been hitherto unknown m the history of New Zealand, and therefore deserves to be ohronioled.
The following from the " Oamaru Mail " will be of interest not only to members of the Eoman Catholic Church but to a lage number of Protestants among whom Archdeacon Colemanis deservedly held m high respect : — Canterbury, whioh has hitherto been inoluded m the Eoman Catholic See of Wellington, is about to be creoted into a new See, of which Archdeacon Coleraan will probably be the Bishop.
A ferryman m the North Island says that during the past season he had to ferry gratuitously over 1000 impeounious tramps.
