*— The C! Taranakl Herald " commenting on the remarks by the various paprß ou the conduct of the Volunteers m the New Plymouth oncarapment saya : — The townspeople of Now Plymouth are as good judges of Urrikinium ts those m othor plnceo, and they say that a better conducted lot of man " on liberty " thoy have never before had to deal with. The men were full of life and spirits, but those are soldiers' and sailors' qualifications. We have raado enquiries m all directions, and can hear of no one instance where a respectable female was molested or in--Bultod. We bavo heard that gato3 had been lifted and carts robbed, bnt find, on enquiry, that nothing of the kind hud been done. We feel sure the public here will bear us out wbeu wo state tint suoh assertionain the Wellington and Wanganui papers are absolutely devoid of truth, and we therefore hope the editors will have the grace to acknowledge that the articles were written owing to their being wrongly informed about the matter.
