Some time ago a butcher Buffered a heavy lobs through aome supposed spiteful persona entering hia elaughtoryard ln the night, removing the fresh ojrcaae of a fat bullock, and throwing it m tha river. Being a poor man thia loea evoked much sympathy and a collection wai immediately instituted among hia friends to put him on his feet again. One of the gentlemen who wont round with the hat succeeded m working on the feeling cf the local publio to the tune of aome £3. It happened tbat the unhappy butcher, on whose behalf the money was raised, was hia debtor to about thia amount ; ao instead of handing him over the money whioh he had collected to oomponsate him for the the loaa of the carcaee, tbe oolleotor handed him a receipt instead, he himaelf appro* priating the full amount. This man had an eye to business and oannot fail some day to rise to a high position m the Government:
