DEATH OF HaKUENE M._?.R.
News from Auckland states* that the audd«.n and unexpected death of Ihaka te Hakuene, M.H. ft for the Northern Maori dia'rict, took place at Russell on Wedneaday last. Ihaka and other Natives <vere attending the Synqd In Auckland, and dined with Archdeacon Clarke en Sunday, a joint of roast beef and a dish of tinned beef being among the- things provided. Several Natives, inoluding Ihaka, partook of the latter and beoame very 111. They oonßulted Dr Hopper m Auokland, who advised them to remain, but Ihaka with two others belonging to the Bay of Islands districts returned yesterday per Clansman, being anxious to be with his friends. Ihaka ainoe his arrival gradually got worse, and expired at 5 o'olook.
