THE CALIFORNIAN THISTLE.
It would appear (says tho " Lyttelton Times") that this noxious weed is more prevalent m the Canterbury district than is generally supposed. Mr Haskett, of Harewood road, called at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Saturday last and left a parcel of thistle heads with. Mr Murphy— a Bamplo of a quantity which he had taken out of a travelling threshing machine. These were obtained from a paddock of wheat m the Harewood road. The crop was much damaged by the presence of the thistles It appears that the thistle is gradually, but surely, taking possession of the field, which is one of deep, loamy soil. The owner, however, has become alive to the threatened danger, and has determined to try and exterminate it by covering the patches thickly with straw. It may easily be .imagined How farm after farm may be polluted by these travelling machines unless thoroughly cleaned previous to leaving each farm.
