THISTLE ENSILAGE.
There waß rather a novel exhibit at the Ba'lan Agrioaltural Show held lasfc week at Ballan (asya the "Weekly Times," Victoria, March 12). This ooasfsted of a sample of ensilage made from the common Sootch thistle. Mr David Wilson, the well known dairyman of Kgerton, it appears, has long held the opinion that both the Sootch and variegated thistles would make very good ensilage, as the plants when out for a day or two, and allowed to " wilt " under the sun, make rich and sncoulent fodder, and are greedily eaten by atoak. Last November, Mr Wilson oarrted his ideas into effect, and pitted a quantity of these thistles m a Bilo. The result haa proved beyond his most sanguine expectations The thistle ensilage Is eaten greedily by the dairy cattle, and a proof of Its effioaoy is shown by the fact that the first priz* butter at the Ballan show was made from milk obtained from cowb fed almost solely on thiatle enfll'a^e. The exhibit at Ballan oreated considerable attraction, and the quality of the stuff wa* prnnonrcpri to be very good,
