Friday next being Good Friday is one of the two holidays whioh are afforded to printers m the whole year. The " Guardian " consequently will not be published on that day. The Ashburton Baptists hare just finished the erection o! a new oharoh, the building being situated m Peter street, and propose to celebrate lhe event by a tea meeting to be held m the Oddfellows' Hall on Good Friday. On the afternoon of the same day a sale of I work will be held m the hall. A prayer meeting will be held m the ohuioh at 7 am. on Sunday morning, but the [other services on that day will be held m the Oddfellows' Hall, as it ia thought that the large congregations whioh are expected to be present could not be accommodated m the ohuroh. This morning m, .the Police Court, before Major Steward, J.P., an inebriate, Erst offence, was fined m the minimum penalty of one shilling and costs with the usual j alternative. Aa important oivil^action'Js to be heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Rakaia, to-motrow, m whioh the Property Tax Commissioner is Bueing Mr M. J. Brown for railway rates levied by the Commissioner under the Distriot Railways Purchasing Aot. The case it a teit one, and the hearing is looked forward to with great interest by the sottlers at Rakaia and Methven. Mr Purnell has been retained as counsel for the Commissioner, and Mr John Holmea for tho defendant. Mr Ivobs addressed a well-attended meeting of the electors at the Sohoolhouse, Ohertsey, last evening. Mr Btraohan occupied the chair. At the dose oi the address Mr Ivess, m replying to questions, said he was m favor of the abolition of the Upper House, as the Governor had the power to exercise his veing powers if (the Lower House were to paSB legislation whiob, m the Governor's opinion, would be detrimental to the welfare of the colony; he would be m favor of reducing the salaries of highly-paid ofiioials, commencing with the Governor. Mr String, fellow moved a vote of thanks to Mr Ivess for his address and renewed confidence m him as member, which was seoonded by Mr Angus. The Chairman, before putting the motion, olaimed the indulgence of the meeting to &ay a few words m support of the vote, Ho remarked that he had opposed Mr Ivess, but since that gentleman's term of office he had had occasion to write to him on matters affeoting the welfare of jthe district, whioh always secured his best attention. There was one thing which he admired about Mr Ivess, and that was he was always approaohable and willing to listen to everything that a constituent had oooaßion to bring under his notice, and he intended to give Mr Ivobb his support at the forthcoming election. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings, A publio meeting of residents m the Altontoa distriot was held at Mr Biloock's house, Winter's Road, last evening, to consider the question of the advisablenesi of erecting a sohool, and als« to discuss other matters of interest to that district. There was a large attendance and Mr Silcook was voted to tho chair. It. was resolved " That the Ashburton Sohool Committee be requested to urge upon the Board of Education for the North Canterbury distriot the necessity of ereoting a school at Allenton without delay." A long disoUßßion took place with reference to the refusal of the Upper Ashburton Road Board to refund to the Borough Council the amount of the nxponsoa inoarred by the Fire Brigades m attending! the fire at Quintan's Brewery. A motion, as follows, was ultimately unanimously carried :— " That this meeting disapprove of the action of the member representing this distriot upon the Upper Ashburton Road Board m sanctioning the refusal of the voting a sum of money to defray the cost incurred by the Borough Fire Brigade at the late fire at Qumton's; that this meeting request the Board to immediately pay Bach cost, and m the caße of such a payment being disallowed by the District Auditor, the inhabitants of the Allenton district will make the amount good." At Timaru on Monday the Resident Magis* trate, m dismissing a non-regietration birth oase m whioh defendant pleaded that he had called at his office but had been unable to find the Registrar, said that where defendants could similarly prove they would be absolved from responsibility. Thn South Australian Government have concluded an agreement to negotiate with an English Syndicate for wattle planting m the south-east.
