The following are the returns far the Ashburton Hospital for the month of March : — Patients m Hospital on Ist March, 7 ; admitted during month, 11 ; discharged, 8 died, 1 ; remaining m Hospital on March 81st, 9.
The Matron of tho Ashburton Hospital acknowledge!, with thanks, the receipt of old linen and clothes from Mrs Peter, books from Mr Frank Peter, and fruit from Mr James Bawle and Mrs llandell for the use of the inmateß. Contributions of old linen will be thankfully received.
Mr Ivess, M.H.R., addressed his conBtituents m the Oddfellows' Hall, Ashburton* on Thursday evening, and reoeived a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence He speaks at the Town Hal!, Rakaia, to night, and at Tinwald on Monday night, the hour being eight o'clock.
Mr 0. G. Hawdon notified that permission to shoot on the Westerfield Estate oannot be granted until after the 20th instant.
At a recent meeting of the trustees of the Wesleyan Church it was decided to hold a jubilee tea mooting, m the Oddfellows' Hall, on the 24th of May. In view of tbo many demonstrations to be held m connection with he Queen's Jubilee, this one on her birthday ought to be successful.
Tho correspondent of the "Press" telegraphs that a fisherman named Charles Edward Taylor has been brought before the Court at Napier on a charge of malioiously beating his eon, seven and a half years old, with intent to do him grievous bodily barm. It seems that the father and son were m a trap, which the little one was driving, when the child taking it too near the edge of the road capaized it. Tho father rightod the trap, and then beat bia son unmercifully with the whip, both with lash and handle.

Mr E. G. Kerr, proprietor of the " South Canterbury Times," has purchased the " Timaru Herald,", and takes possession on May 1.
The Northampton " Herald " records the marriage (on Feb. 1) of Miss Kate Moorhouee, daughter of T. 0. Moorhouse, Esq., of Ohrietoharoh, Now Zealand, and niece of E. Moorhouse, Esq., now resident at Lamport Hall, with Major H. Elsdnle, 8.E., of Chatham. It was solemnised at the pretty little church at Lamport, m the preaenoe of a largo number of the friends of the contracting parties.
George and Charles Parker and Francis J. Slater were brought up before H. J. LeCren, Esq., and CaptaiD Hayter, at Ihe Timaru Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with an indecent OBsault upon a girl of 17 at Fairlie Creek on March 22. A statement has been published m London Bhowing that the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company is losing at the rate of £40, 000 per annum by tbo reductions made last year m the telegraphic rates between Europe and Australia.
A Timaru telegram of yesterday's dats says that Mr Murdooh Elder, well-known as a Highland piper, was pioked up on the road near Fairlie Creek. It is supposed he was thrown off his horse. He was removed to an hotel, and died about i p.m. Mr Elder had a wife living m Timaru. An inquoßt is to be held.
