CULTIVATION OF AFRICAN DESERTS.
Tt will be remembered that some years ago Colonel Roudaire brought forward a proposal to transform some of the deserts io Africa into Inland seas, the level of the soil being at present about 80ft below that of the Mediterranean. An alternative proposal was made by Colonel Landau, who has aotually commenced to work on these lines, and he bas just presented to the French Academy of Science a report; In whioh he states that he has driven an artesian well m tbe dese»rt to the depth of 300 ft, which is now discharging fresh water at the rate of 2000 gallons a minot", which Bufficea for the Irrigation of 500 hectares This area was a desert a year ago, and is now a fertile and well stocked district. A ssoond artesian well is now being driven, to extend this area of fertilisation — Tndn«itrieß,
