THE UNACKNOWLEDGED SALUTE.
A telegram from Auckland regarding the. arrival of the French warship Duquesnat da Lairs staten that through ■ome bnngle the steamer's salute was not returned, and that the Admiral wos con■lderabijr incensed. It is now explained that had the Admiral observed the etiquette oustomary on such occasions, be would have saved himself from maoh annoyance. It is tho practice when a foreign man-of war arrives at a port for the officer m command to send ashore •nd enquire if any salute will be re-' ■ponded to. Had this been done yesterday the Admiral would have ascertained that a salute could not be fired on that oocatlon, as the Permanent Artillerymen were then on their way from Wellington to Auckland. This explanation mny account for the non-firing of a aaluto from the batteries, but does not account for the emission of- the Volunteer Artillery to return the salute In the absence of the permanent force, as they used to do before the latter force or ths forts were m existence.
