Apropos of the Divorce Court, the correspondent of the " Liverpool Post " sayß that " the jury m the Colin Campbell oase have had an interesting reminiscence of their ordeal m Mr Jußtice Butt's Court. Lady Colin Campbell Bent a New Year's card' to every juryman, aooompanied by an appropriate motto." In consequence of the ruinously low prices obtained for last season's fruit crop, a large □amber of growers m Kent, England, have grabbed their orchards. This has beendone even m cases where the crop of 1886 was the most proliflo on record, the growers stating thai it would not be worth their while to grow frait and sell it at the price of last season. Some Volunteers have, we are sorry to see, been misconducting themselves m Wellington, It appears that three men, who were the woree for liquor, attempted to force their way into the circus tent without paying for admission. On being arrested they resisted the police, and some Volunteers m the crowd which had gathered disgraced themselves by behaving m a manner calculated to incite publio feeling against the police. So at any rato wires a correspondent of the " Christ* ohurch Telegraph "of yesterday. If the facts are really as represented those Volunteers should be made an example of. A large tract of 3G6 acres of Crown lands has just been reserved at Western Port m connection with the scheme for the defence of Melbourne. It is proposed to establish a permanent military camp there on the model of Aldershot. The nse of dynamite as an instrument of crime has become so common that a bill was introduced lately m the Senate of California making it a misdemeanour for any person legitimately dealing m dynamite to fail to keep a reoord of all sales that are made, with the names of the purchasers, etc. The Auckland correspondent of a Dunedin paper says :— Old Maurice Kelly, of Wade, who voted at |the Wado lioensing elections, attained the age of 102 years 10 weeks ago. The old man was very frail, and deolared it would be tho HUt vote he wonld record m this world. He was so ill afterwards that his life was despaired of. The " Chrfstchuroh Press " says the following private telegram from Melbourne has been received : — " Barley — The demand iB strong. We have made salos up to five shillings." Aotive military preparations are said to be m progress m Austria. Large oontracts have been made for provisions for the army, the heads of the railway administrations have been called upon to make prospective arrangements for Jthe transport of troopß under the oontingenoy of mobilisation, andlorders have been sent to all the hospitals of the Bed Cross Society to raise their staffs of nurses and attendants to their full strength, and to quadruple the number of available beds. A trial trip of a new railway carriage has been made on the Victorian railways; The carriage, which is built on the American double bogie prinoipal, is 46 feet long, and is divided into two large compartments, at one end being a dining saloon fitted with every requisite, and at the other a smoking and sitting saloon. A small part on the centre is apportioned off for the use of the guard, and to permit of the oonstruotion of a handsome buffet. At Cbristoburch yesterday Mr Justice Johnston, m Chambers, gave a deoision of considerable importance to shareholders of publio companies. Several persons, who had been sued for the amount of oalls m the Kaiapoi Glasß Company, applied to have their names struck off the list of shareholders. The affidavit of ..William Hollier, whose case was typical of all, was that m August, 1H8& applicant applied to some persons, calling themselves direotors of Ihe company, for 25 shares therein, but paid no money on application. In April, 1886, the oorapany was registered, and notification of allotment was received by applioant seven months after his application. He, however, took no notice of it, nor bad he paid any money or taken any steps m connection with the company. At the inquest on the body of Thomas Lewis, who was found drowned m the Avon on Thursday, a verdict of " Found Drowned " was returned. It was stated that the night Vfore (he body was found, Lewis had called at two publiohouses, at one of whioh he was refused liquor because he was drunk. At the other he got a pint of beer before the barmaid noticed his condition, but he was afterwards refused drink. The Coroner, referring to the law on the subject, said that the barmaid was not responsible. The law required amending. Assuming that the barmaid had supplied the man with liquor knowing him to be drunk, neither she nor the landlord, if absent from tho premises, could, under the existing law, be found responsible, if the landlord had instructed the barmaid not to serve drunken men. At Mr Dunoan Wright's meeting at Flemington on Thursday evening there was a very large attendance. The children sent m eleven texts. The subjeot of address was the necessity of the New Birth, and olose attention was given. The Revels Messrs J. Newbold, A. Blake, and others took part. On Friday evening the interest seemed to be on the increaee. Notwithstanding the want of moonlight there was a larger number still present, the ohuroh being comfortably filled. Fourteen text papers were handed m by the children. X very solemn and searching address was given on " Why not to night," and nearly the whole congregation waited for the second meoting. Mr Wright preaohea to-morrow forenoon at Tinwald, and at Flemington m the afternoon and evening. A grass fire has been burning for several days on Lyttelton heads. On Thursday night it approached so near the Pilot Station that a telephone message was Bent to Lyttelton for aasißtanoe. The tug went out with the firemen, who saved the houses by barning away the grass aronnd them. Soundings taken to ascertain the extent of the silting-up within the moles at Lyttelton harbor during the few months since dredging has been suspended, show that m some places three to four feet of mud have accumulated. At the fifth annual meeting of the Canterbury Frozen meat Company a 10 per cent dividend was declared. A bonus of £250 was voted to the directors. Mr John Grigg was re-elected Chairman.
