MANCHESTER ON FREETRADE AND PROTECTION.
The following, ex'racted from n late English paper, shows m a very prominent and remarkable way how seriously the minds of people m "England are being f-xoroi3ed upon the question of Protoctl< n versus Freetrada. At the quarterly meeting of the Man cheater Chamber of Commerce, Mr Rusael moved, and Mr Hibberd seconded, thlaraaolutioa — ' That having waited m vain for more than forty year a for other nations to follow England's Freetrade example, this Chamber thlnkß the time hau now arrived to reoonaider its position*" On the motion being put 'here voted 21 for and 22 against. The "London Times," commenting on this, Bays — "This has happened m tho very Boat and seminary of Freetrade dootrlno ; the city i:i | which Meaarß Cobden and Bright bat f c red down the earthworks of Protection ; and not among working men Buffering from reduced wages or lack of employment, but among the chosen representatives of the business men of the middle c'aaß."
