Residents m the Mount Somers district will be sorry to see by what transpired at the meeting of the County Counoil to-day that a serious and apparently fatal hitoh has occurred m connection with the carrying out of the projeoted Mount Somers tramway. It is held by the Crown lawyers that the terms of seotion 21 of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Aot do not authorise the taking of signatures instead of a poll m parts of a district, and that the word district; must be taken to mean m this case ths whole county. Consequently the money will not be available at anyrato until after the matter has been referred to Parliament, when m all probability the diffioulty will be removed by legislation. .

The Wellington correspondent of the " Press " says that Mr Walter Johnston and Mr Jollicoe have both declined to Btand for Te Aro. Ho adds: — "There are, however, three certain candidates— Mr Travers, the well-known barrister and ex-Minister, who formerly represented Wellington; Mr Eraser, the Temperance candidate, who ran Mr Johnston close at the last eleotion ; and Mr Nancarrow, ox-Inspector of Machinery. My own impression is tbat the oontest will be between Mr Travers and Mr Fraaer, although Mr Nancarrow is very confident on the strength of a casual promise made to him ; but as Mr Fraser will poll a temperance blook vote, he may pull through should there be muoh splitting between Mr Travers and Mr Nancarrow, otherwise I think Mr Travers has the beßt show."
