We are glad to see that the Now Zoaland Mutual Creditors Association has opened an ftgancy m Aahbur;on, Mr E. J. Paul having been appointed its local representative. The Association supplies subscribers with confi'*" dential information eg to the standing, character Und reputation of persons with whom they have to transact business, undertakes the collection of accounts, rents, etc, and also supplies advico on points of mercantile law. A number of well-known business firms testify to the great value and thorough reliability of the Association.
Dr Lynn has informed MrE. Elston that he will be unable to proJuce bis entertainment m Ashburton for two months. On the occasion of his visit, however, he intends to play two nights.
Tbe installation of Worshipful Master and tho investiture of officers of the Somerset Lodge, No. 1811, E.G., took ploca m the Masonio Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of visiting brethren, the Ashbuiton, Eakaia, Lyttelton, Christchurch, and other lodges being represented. The ceremony was conducted by R.W.D.G.M. Bro H. Thomson, who was accompanied by Bro O. A. C. Hardy, P.G.S.W., and Bro Derbridge | D.G.S.W. The following officers were inducted into office :— W.M., Bro E. Dimant ; 1.P.M., Bro J. Davison ; S.W. Bro, J. Salek ; J.W., Bro W. H. Kneen ; treasurer, P.M. Bro Felton ; secretary, Bro J. B, Oolyer ; S D., Bro J. L. Brown ; J.D., Bro E. J. Paul ; organist, Bro W. H. Kneen ; 1.G., Bro H.H. Beddek; D.C., Bro A. M. Pearson ; stewards, Bros W. Pattman and C. H. Williams ; tyler, Bro B. Oullen. The ohoral portions of the ceremony were ably and impressively rendered by an efficient oboir under tbe leadership of Bro Kneen. At the conclusion of the installation the brethren adjourned to the refectory where a sumptuous and tempting repast was provided, and the following loyal, masonic, and patriotic toasts were duly honored : — " The Queen and Craft;" " H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, M.W. Grand Master of England;" "The Grand Masteia of Scotland and Ireland ; " " The D.G.M. of Canterbury;" "The W.M. Elect;" "Tie 1.P.M. ; " " Past Masters ; " " Officers, Patt and Present;" "Sister Lodges and Visiting
Brethren;" " The Ladies ;" " The Stewards;'
and " The Tylers Toaar." Tho programme was varied by musical selections rendered by several of the brethren, and an entertaining
and instructive evening was spent.
Many of our readers, residents m the Wakanui district especially, will regret to Bee by an announcement m another column that Mr Thomas Brankin, who has been for some time m failing health, expired at Dunedin yesterday, he being m that city for medical advice. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss. He was a prominent member of the Bom an Catholic Churob, and during his illness m Dunedin reoeived the ministrations of the llav. Father' Lynoh, who, telegraphs that his death was a very edifying one. The body will be brought up to Ashburton, and will be taken to his late residence, and thence to the church on Sunday morning.
Our readers interested m land and agricultural matters ar« naked to give their attention to the advertisement now appearing m our columns regarding the sale by Messrs Miles and Co. of the Biversdale ostate, and aIBO 900 acres of Mr Graham's farm. Both estates are out up by survey into convenient sieed blocks, and will be offered m Mr George Jameson's rooms on April 2 next. The Biversdale estate, if not Bold m one block, will then bo sold m farrnH, and should readily find purchasers m either case, the land being good and near Tinwald markot and railway station, and the other estate of 900 acres has been under grass for a number of years, so should now be m good heart for breaking up for grain crops. Plans of both estates are to be had at Mr Jameson's oflioo. Deaths by alcoholism, the " New York Herald " asserts on what it declares to bo authenlio statistic?, have decreased throughout the United States during the last fifteen years from a ratio of 111 to 45 m eaoh 1000 from all cauBCB.
It is rumoured m managerial circles that all the London theatres are to be opened free for a whole week during the Jubilee rejoicings this year. Mr Julian Thomas, " The Vagabond," is going for the "Victorian Wesleyan Spectator," for libel, damages £10,000. ' Mr Stephen Noble Brown, late of the 11 Cromwell Argus," has purohased a large interest m the " Dunedin Evening Herald."
Mr New was tbe father of eleven sons and one daughter. He ran short of names towards the end, and so tho youngest son was called " Nothing New," and tbe daughter " Something New."
The " Spectator" says that every '• acquisition made by France since 1870 has brought hor more directly within the grasp of the British fleet, while her attitude towards Italy has given us the unexpected advantage of a powerful ally within the Mediterranean. We clip the following important testimonial from the " Illawarra Rtercurry " (N.S.W.), on the 30ch March. It needs no comment: — " Mr John Loveday, of the Bulli Mountain, writes to us that after suffering for four years with acute gravel, he has experienced almost complete relief by using Sander and Sons' Eucalypti Extract. He pays seeing the said Extract advertised m the " Illawarra Mercury," bis intense suffering induced him to obtain a bottle of the medicine from Mr Hosking, chemist, of this town, and that the use of it gave him great relief at once. day writes nlso that he has found I he Eucalypti Extract a cure for rheumatism as well as gravel. He requests us to publish this information through tho " Moroury."
