AN "OLD SOLDIER"

The Benevolent Trustees were Ihis week unwittingly the means of helping the eecape of a man "wanted" by the police. At tho mooting a letter was received from Sir George W'hitmure, re commending aid to an old AC. man. The relieving cfiicor reported that he had paid the man a passage to Greymouth, as desired by him It baß since beoome known that this individual, who appeared to to m every respect an " old soldier," had bahaved very badly m Masterton; Etta uame it appears is Joseph Jaokvon, and m the early part of last month he engaged two furnished rooms from a Mr Mahoney. w hilst Mahoney was away from Master ton, Jr.cksrn cleared out everything of value from the cottags, including beddi-\e, tho clock, lookingglasses, cocking* uteneila, &c, and sold them to a second-hand dealer- Having Bpenfc the irocetds m drink he oleared to Wellington. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
