LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Wo have been requested to remind members of the A6hburton Rifles end Guards that the Government Inspection Parade takes place on Monday evening, at seven o'clock, m drill order. Men absent without leave will, of coarse, render themselves liable to severe fines and penalties. In ,'our last issue we noticed a magnificent exhibit of apples intended to be exhibited at the Ghristchurch Horticultural Show by Mr G. T. Smith, gardener, of this town. We are pleased, but not surprised, to learn that Mr Smith secured first prize against fifteen competitors. For about an hour after sunset laot evening the southwestern-heavens wore suffused with an afterglow of exceeding brilliance and beauty, ranging m tint from the palest primrose to the deepest orange, and forming a gorgeous background against which the contour of the Southern Alps was outlined with a remarkable distinctness. A treat of no ordinary kind is m store for the pnblio of Ashburton, Mr Stewart, advance agent of Dr Lynn, the famou3 escamateur and illusionist, having yesterday visited the town to make arrangements for an exhibition of the Doctor's Bkill at the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday evening next. We had the pleasure of witnessing Dr Lynn's opening performance at the Princess Theatre, Dunedin, on Monday last, and oan safely say that his marvellous feats surpass anything ever before seen m this oolony. If seeing is believing, then one must believe that he outs a living man to pieces and then puts him together again, none the worse, and causes a lady to vanish into thin air at his bidding, besides performing a number of other remarkable tricks. As Dr Lynn will appear for only one night we advise all lovers of the marvellous not to miss the opportunity. At a meeting of the directors of the Caledonian Sooiety hold last evening at the Secretary's office, the President, Mr Donald McLean, occupied the chair, and eleven directors were present. After a discussion with respect to a communication from Mr Sim regarding the next production of Bob Boy, it was resolved, 11 That a Committee be appointed to arrange for the reproduction of the drama, Buch Committee to consist of Messrs Beid, Paul, Anderson, and Brown ; and that Mr Douglas be asked to assist." On the motion of Mr Mcßae, it was resolved not to appoint a permanent Executive Committee, but that the business of the Society! be carried on by the directors as usual. A letter was received from Mr Steward thanking the Society for his election as Vice-President, and [apologising for unavoidable absence from the meet* ing. A long discussion took place re disposing of the Sports Ground. It was finallydecided to appoint a Committee to wait on the Ashburton Racing Club with the objeot of obtaining the race oourse on reasonable terms. The meeting then terminated. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ash. burton Hospital Board was held at the County Council Chambers yesterday. Present: Messrs W. C. Walker (Chairman), D. McLean, A. Harrison, J. Jackson, and the Mayor. — A list of patients admitted to and discharged from tho, Hospital during the month was laid on tho table. — Accounts amounting to £11 12s were passed for payment— The Mayor and Mr Harrison were authorised to arrange for oiloloth for staircase and for a mangle. — 1\ was resolved to increase the salary of Thomas Jones, who is emyloyed at the institution, by £10 per year. — Boutine business having been transacted, the Board adjourned. We understand that arrangements for hold, ing sports at Chertsey on Easter Monday are being zealously pushed forward by those having the matter m hand. A fund for the purpose of providing prizes is being liberally subscribed to, and a working Committee, consisting of Messrs Hood, Stringfellow, Doig, Strachan, Childs, McDonald, Ewing, Downie, and Welsh has been appointed to make all the necessary arrangements, and prepare programme of sports. In all probability a very pleasant day's amusement will be provided for residents of the district and visitors who may favor the games with their patronage on the occasion. A Christohuroh paper says that the proposal of Mr C. P. Hulbert, to oelebrate the Queen's jubilee by the ereotion of an Old Men's Home , to provide funds for whioh some grand f€te shall be given, is finding favor m influential quarters, and no doubt m a few dayg steps will be taken towards calling together the citizens of Christohuroh and representative men of Canterbury for the purpose of initiating the movement. The Timaru Borough Council are going m for retrenchment. A looal paper says the 'Council have started with the charwoman, whose " Borew " has been reduced from 15s to 10a per week. The other reductions are m the future. The Counoil have, however, decided to ask the ratepayers to borrow £17,000 for drainage purposes. We obae/ve that Mr W. Corrie Johnston continues his addresses at the Town Hall to-morrow, and that he is to speak at Chertsey on Monday and Wednesday next. By a fire whioh took place at Eyle on Thursday evening four staoks of wheat belonging to Mr James Moßohan were destroyed. The stacks were insured m the Colonial office for £80. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hampatead School Committee was held at the schoolroom last evening. Present : Messrs P. T. Mayo (chairman), G. Lamb, J,. Dalley, J. Hunt, G. Andrews, and P. Fawoett. A letter was read from the Board gf Education forwarding result of pupil teachers' examination.— The master's report was read and adopted. He complained of the way m whioh the Sunday school ohildren used the furniture, considerable damage being done.— lt was resolved to draw the attention of the Sunday school teachers to the matter 'complained of by the master. — The usual monthly accounts were passed for payment. — It was resolved m view of two accidents which had taken place recently to procure a quantity of tan to be spread under the gymnastic apparatus. —Mr Andrews was authorised to sign cheques with the chairmanvice the late seoretary. —It was decided to erect a gate at the corner of the sohool grounds near the caretaker's* residence. — Messrs Hunt #nd Lamb were appointed a visiting committee, and tho Committee adjourned. To the Lames.— Owing to ill-health, I have been unable to master the sixteen miles ride to Church or Chapel, and hence my Sunday savings have amounted to2ls 6d, and as the Committee never send for my cash, I thought of a good way m whiffh I might spend the said 2is 6d, viz , by paying for this advertisement for a short time, and relieve suffering humanity, by te'ling them of the worth of Ferriman's Marvellous Steam Washer. During a very trying sickness it has been a source of great comfort to see my little Polly, just turned nine, doing all my wash, and saving me wony, besides the saying of 'he fuel, clothes, soap, time, and adding to the health of my husband arcl nine children.— (Signed) A Mother, who is blessed m ,the possession of a good Washer. Mv name arid address may be had at the office of this paper on paying the cost of a Wjfther for a sister of mine }v Otago.—APVT
