ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL
Yesterday afternoon the School Committee represented by Messrs Duncan (chairman), Bilcock, Sawle, Dimant, and illaton attended at the Borough School to present good attendance certificates to those who were entitled to them for' the half-year ending December 31st, 1886/ The certificates are very handsome ones; printed at tte- Mail "office, and provided by the liberality of the Committee. The firet-cUvs certificates are given to those who did not fail to put m an appearance once during the half year, and the three children .vho obtained them had their photographs placed on the cards. Tho second class certificates ■ (24 m number) were given to those who attended 220 times and upwards out of a possible 229. The proceedings were opened .by the head master thanking the Committee on behalf of the teachers and himself for their assistance m endeavoring to seoure a regular attendance, the want of which is at preeoDt a great drawback to the progress of the school. He drew the attention of the Committee to. the fact that out of 48 times tho school has been open this year only 202 out of 412 on the roll have attended 40 times and upwards, and that comoquently the teachers could only really be responsible for 50 per cent, of their pupils. The Chairman then presented the certificates expressing his pleasure m doing so, and together with Messrs Sawle and Pilcock delivered short encouraging addresses to tho children. The Committee generally expressed the hope that next half year tho number of certificates given would be double that which it was at present. The proceedings terminated by hearty applause from the children as thanks to the Committee for exertions on their behalf The following is a list of those obtaining certificates : — FIRST-CLASS CERTIFICATES.
