The last quartorly meeting of the Lioensing Committee for the Borough of Aahburton wftß held at the Courthouse at noon today. Present— Messrs T, Soaly (chairman), D. Thomas, J. Tuoker, C. Harrison, and B. Hughes. An application was made for a transfer of the license of tho Railway Refreshment Rooms from R. J. Whittle to W. Drummond. There being no opposition on the part of the police the transfer was granted. An extension of the hour for dosing from 10 to 11 p.m. was granted to W.Pattman, licensee of the Somerset Hotel, the polioe reporting very favorably on the manner m which the house had been conduoted.
Letters from places beyond the colony, received at the Ashburton Post Office during the month of November, and addressed to the persons aftermentioned, are now lying unolaimed, viz., Charles Davies and J. Taylor.
An aooident took place late last night on the siding opposite Messrs H. Zander and Co.'s premises. The employees of Messrs Matson and Co. were working late loading oats for export per steamer, and two loaded trucks not being ooupled on to the reßfc ran down the line and over the buffers at the end of the rails. They were unloaded this morning and replaced on the lino without injury.
Trooper A. E. Reiner, who has been stationed m Ashburton for the last two years, has received notice that he is to be transferred to Timaru. Daring his stay here Trooper Remer has performed bis duty m an exemplary manner, and has made many friends who will regret his departure. Trooper Casey, of Timaru, will, we understand, take Tooper Remet's place here.

A Napier paper records the sudden death of a Maori named Karuarina. He was bathing m the Manawatu river, and it was seen that he was suffering, blood flowing copiously from bis nose and mouth. He was brought ashore, and a few minutes afterwards expired.

On Saturday at the V.R.O. Autumn Meeting the New Zealand horse Nelson won the Esseadon Stakes easily by throe lengths, and another of our horses, Mr Stead's Loobiel, won a big race, the Newmarket Handioap. Nelson is quoted favorite for the Australian Cup at 3 to JL.
The " North Otogo Times" remarks, that it will interest poliojholders m Ihe Government Insurance Department to learn that the bonus certificates are m the course of "preparation, and every effort is being made to have them distributed this month. The cash surplus is nearly £250,000— bciog 25 per cent of total assets at time of valuation, a result which we understand, has not hitherto been attained by an institution of only 15 years standing. Cf this sum, £150,000 will be divided, leaving £100,000 to be carried forward.
