EXTRAORDINARY HAIL STORM.

I A oorreipondent of the. Opotiki Herald, at Whakat&ne, writes: — '• Some. natives, who arrived here the other day from Ruatshuna, a settlement distant some 40 odd miles from here report a very peouliar meteoreologfoal phenomenon as having oconrred there on the 17th of last month, m the shap3 of a terrific hall-storm, the natives asserting that the atones were fully as large as a man's fist, varied by large sheets of ice. So violent wis the downpour, though lasting but one hoar and a-half, that whole brandies of trees were broken off, and the potato plants were buried In the hoil, while the wharea were invaded by watar to the depths of (ea inches, where water had never been seen before. So impressed wera the natives with the awfulness of the ocourrenoe they wore fully persuaded the ' Last Day ' had come, and with aomo difficulty they oongregated en masse, resolved to die together. They soon, however, found that tHe storm finished, and settled down into calm once morn. The storm was purely looal, covering nu area of a few aores only.
