The Relieving Officer's report shows an increase of 23 adults and 70 children to the list for the past month, principally families whoee broad winners have gone to the gumfields and who require temporary relief.
At a meeting x>f the Auckland Mercantile and Agricultural Company t a resolution for winding up the Company and disposing of the stock was confirmed.

The coal carried by the Hauraki was owned by the Brunner Company, and was not insured. No further particulars have been' received. The crew are probably making their way overland to Nelson.
Fifty pounds has been subscribed by the children of seventy State schools towards a fund for providing penny dinners for starving children m London. The amount has been forwarded to the Lord Mayor by the Banlyrf New Zealand f reebf charge. The postal authorities have for some time had the establishment of an inland parcels post system m view, and arrangements are so far forward that tenders will soon be caUed for the necessary baskets, hampers, boxes, &c. This new branch of the Bervice will begin operations m the early part of the coming winter.
The Government intend to take Btops to permit the Natives, aa their titles become individualised, to deal with their lands m their own right, certain restrictions being Imposed ci to area. Some of the Natives own individually a very large amount of land, and it is not thought desirable to offer facilities to dispose of such holdings In a lump. In the caso of St. Bsrbe and Tronaon v the Lyttdton Times, claiming £100 for alleged breach of copyright, the Resident Magistrate held that the obj action of counsel for the defence that the registration waa void, owing to the names of both plaintiff a being inserted as 'authors, whereas Tronaon was really the sole author, was fatal, acd nonsuited the plaintiff*, with csta £3 3j,

A movement is on foot to promote a suitable memorial of Mr James Macandrew. Many tre m favor of a statue and others favor tho founding of scholarships. With a view of deciding what form it should take, the Mayor haß called a meeting to settle the point.
A conference of representatives of the contributing and managing bodies under the Charitable Aid Ac*, called by the Mayor of Duuedin, was hell to right. A resolution was submitted that it was desirable to amend the lav m regard to charitable aid, but this was lost by 14 to 9, some six delegates deo'ining to vote until they knew what direotlon the amendments would tak*. The conference was therefore aomewhat of a •' boil over," and it is now proposed that another should be held, composed of representatives of contributing bodies on'y«
The Auckland Chamber of Oommoroe hava asked Mr Twopeny, of Danedin, to lay before them full details of his proposal for holding a S>uth Pacifio Exhibition at Auck'aod, instead of the Colonial Treaaurer'd Maritime Exhibition.
