THE SIZE OF JERSEY COWS.
The following iB taken from a paraph- { let entitled " Numerona facta about Jersey Oat tie," published by the American Jersey Cattle Club : "An objection ta Jerseys often heard from persons not well acquainted with the breed Is that the cowb are too small to suit farmers gener* rally. While it is true that there are many email Jerseyj, it is also true thai there are many of good Biza ; and any breeder o»n, with a little effort, build op a herd large enough for any dairy purposes. It is by no means unusual for Jersey cows to weigh over one thousand pounds when m working order. Mr Burnett states that the average weight of the entire milking herd at Deer foot Farm is about 1000 lb. In other cases where breeders have given special attention to size the average weight of herds is as great. Mr 0. E. Brown, of Nova Scotia, who owns Nabrilza (No £820), states that her usual weight ia 1500 lb., and she has weighed 1650 lb. at times. Her dam, Branltza 5383, was bought by Mr Brown m May 1876, when m very low condition although she had a good frame and then weighed 700 lb She had been halfstarved all her life. She was then put on a generous diet, served m Juce. 1876, and until March, 1877, when Nabri z% was dropped, the dam wae steadily gair>— ing. In November, 1877, Braaitza weighed 1120 lb., m fair order— a gain of 330 lb. man adult cow. This gain while breeding seems to have given an impetus to the calf. Nabrifz) weighed 1871 b. when two months old, 595 lb. at eight months, 1055 at twenty months, 1290 lb. at three years, and 1540 at four years of age. An own sister of this cow habitually weighs 1050 , and a eon two years old ffeighed 12001 b,"
