THE STANLEY EXPEDITION
Albany, Febrnary 22. The following is a summary of newa per Ma sp ilia fiom London, dated January 21?t : -
Tho expedition for the relief of Emir Bey by Stanley starts tc-day for Ziozibar m order to take commend of the expedition ard relieve Emir, This Will be the biggest non-military expedition whioh ever entered Africa, and will comprise a staff of six leading members, ir.clnding a m"3 >r and lieutenant of the Royal Engineers, pent by the War Office, and a few Egyptian soldiers to assist m disciplining the horde of about 15,000 blacks corupris iog the main body. The* route of the expedition has cot yet been decided, but it will In oi-y case muster at Zarzibar, whence it tray go round the Cape to tho Congo, or across the continent to Stanley falls. The King of tha Belgians has offered the use of the -Congo steamers, and the land of Albert Nyanz* might be reached before the Maivanga King Uganda, the most hostile Chief on the line of route, had even heard of the expedition. If the Congo route be taken tho expedition may be expected to ascend the river as far as the river Aruwimi or Stanley Falls at Wellington, where it might arrive by the begiolng of May, as it must reach Emir at Wadelal by July. Stanley intends to establish a camp at the base of operations at some distance from the Congo route to Albert Nyacza and will also probably negotiate for the assistance of Tippoo Tip, a celebrated Arab slave dealer. Stanley has, however, not only the usual difficulties of African travel to reckon with, but also the official Anxiety of the French Governmert regarding Missionaries m Uganda and the sensitiveness of Germany regarding her recent territorial acquisitions In Eastern Africa The expedition will be furnished with Maxim and Nordenfeldt machine guns. The Pall Mall Gazette announces that Stanley has decided to take the Congo route and that the transport bteamera will be ready at Zanzibar m four weeks' time.
