The report was adopted. ! FIRE BBIGADU COMMITTEE. I
The Fire Brigade Committee reported aa follows:— Or Friedlander has been elected Chairman of the Oommittoe. The Com* mittee of tho Fire Brigade attended and ex* plained its reasons for tbe request that the old offioes be granted as a residence for tbe brigade's cleaner. Your Committee, after fully considering the application, resolved, " That under the present finanoial ciroum* stances of the Borough, jour Committee
does not feel justified m recommending an expenditure of about £50, as tbe offioes, m their present state, are not suitable for a residence. While reoommending that the large room of the old Chambers be used by ' the Brigade aß a meeting room, your Corn* mittee wishes to oorreot an apparent mistake on part of the Fire Brigade, who consider that the • Council granted them the use of the whole building, while m point of faot only tbe large room waß granted. Your Committee begs to call the attention of the Counoit to olaußs 6 of its report of 22nd January, 1836, viz. :— That the cleaner shall reoeive a salary of £20 per annum without a house. Your Committee does not see its way to recommend an increase of salary to one officer, whioh the granting of a residence to the cleaner would amount to, as it was not understood from tbe members of the Brigade that any corresponding reduction m his salary was contemplated, move co as the Counoil has lately been compelled to reduos the salaries of some of its offloers. — Your Committee recommend that the attention of the Brigade be drawn to the necessity for conforming to Bule No. 3, as it finds Mr W. E. Dolman has been appointed Lieutenant without having his name submitted to tbe Couboil for Bp* proval aß a member of the Brigade, wbioh should be done at onae. Your Committee re« commend that tbo Lieutenant of tbe Aih* burton Volunteer Fire Brigade be appointed a Fire Inspeotor m place pf Lieutenant Say, resigned.
Or Friedlander, tbeJOhairman oi the Fire Brigade Committee, explained the circumstances of the drawing up of the report. He stated that he bad forwarded a oopy of the report to tbe Fire Brigade, from tbe Seoretary of wbioh body he had received a latter, m which it was stated that the sum of £15 and not £50 was the amount that would be required to effect the necessary alterations at tbe old offices ,to- flfc them up as a dwellinghouie. He was oi tha opinion that tho alterations could not be etfeoted for the smaller sum. Th« letter further stated that the omission of forwarding Lieutenant Dolman's name for approval to the Counoil was an oversight. The Brigade now submitted bis name for approval both aa a member aud as Lieutenant of tho Brigade* Tho report was adopted.
AH APPLICATION.
Mr J. R Steele waited ou tbe Couuoil, aud applied for a reduotion of tbe rent of the Couuoil reserve occupied by him, as he considered the amount qe had to pay excessive. Failing a reduotion be aßked the Oounoil to take the eeotiori off bis hands,
