SHARKS BY THE THOUSAND.
What • tru'y delightful bathing place must Oorio Bay, Qeriong, be. During a reoent visit of Captain Mandeville, Viotoriau Inspector of Fisheries, to test the truth of the wonderful yarns told with regard to the immense quantities of sharks oaaght there, he went out one day fully equippedi and prepared to catch some, but the result of the very first haal was almost miraculous.. When the first net waa hauled m it was found to contain 8540 sharks. Altogether, five boats whioh were out that day oap ured 83 0 sharks, 2050 soldiers, and 100 leather jicke'a. Captain Prioe formally superintended tbe counting, which was done by three men and ocoupled three hours The sharks were only about a foot long and quite young. It would bo imagined that such little things would not be ablo to do any damage, but Captain Mandeville states that they are able to bite their more peaceful friends moat unmercifully. He has m his possession tho head of a mullet b. spring a mark, which is evidently tbe bite of one of those young sharks. He says there Is no doubt that the bay Is a huge spawning ground for sharks.
