FIRE AT THE EMPIRE HOTEL CHRISTCHURCH.

A fire broke oat ia the Empire hotel, High etreet, occupied by Me R. Richardson, yesterday, and would probably have been serious, v but for the substantial brick walla that confined it. It ooramanoerl about a quarter past one o'clock, and immediately that it was discovered the alarm wwj raised, tr> whtoh the Brigade promptly responded, and the Railway Brigade w.»a also present. The fire waa situated m a part of the place rather difficult of access, and was noticed to be burning through aad under the roof of the back part of the hotel. The chemical engine was employed to prevent it spreading to the top storey bedrooms while the pumping engines were got ready. Twolines of hose wore then ran out from the Deluge at the Cathedral tank, one being passed up the stairs of the building occupied by the Seliryn Oounty Oouooil and Industrial Association, through and over the roof, and thence to the roof of the Empire, and the other was taken up the Empire stairs. A line from tho Extinguisher at the White Hart phyed on the building at the baok. This supply of water sucoeeded In quenching the fire, which was confined to a room m the roof contain' ing linen asd other articles of similar texture. None of the bedrooms were very greatly injured, though those at the extreme easterly end were damaged and the furniture disfigured with smoke and water. The insurance on the whole building is about £7000 m the Equitable offioe. This amount however it reInsured.

The building is owned by Mr J. Oarl, and Js insured for £4000 In the Meroantile Union. The correofc insurances are, stock, £1000 ; furniture, £1000 ; Hnen, apparel, china, books, &c, £600; plate and jewellery, £fBS ; piano, £65 ; billiard table, £150; total, £7000, all ia the Mercantile Union.
