The annual meeting of the Ashburton Rifle Volunteers was held at the Drillshed on Mondayi Captain Dolman in the ohair. The balance-sheet, whioh showed a credit of £2 odd, was adopted. Bandmaster Hosken, Corporal Leitch, Private Aehton, and Private Sim were eleoted a committee. Totes of thanks for services rendered were accorded to Major Douglas, Capt Dolman, and SergeantMajor Hayes. Lieut Dunn brought forward a requisition, signed by nearly every member of the company, asking Captain Dolman to withdraw his resignation, and this he consented to do. It was resolved " That the Committee be empowered to spend £10 10s in providing souvenirs of Major Douglas 1 and Gaptain Fooks' oonneotion with the company, and that the Committee also provide a sword for the Sergeant-Major as a token of the Company's appreciation of his services as Color-Sergeant, also that the sum of £5 5b $e spent in providing a BOUT6DU {or Captain Bolnjaq,"'

The Wanganui borough valuations are £800 lower than last year, being now £38,709 10f. They have been going down steadily for years.
The bore for petroleum at Botokautuku, Poverty Bay, is now down 1580 feet. The prpspeot is said to be good, oil showing freely through the sand. It is probable the sinking will have to be carried 50 feet farther.
Wanganui must be badly off in the matter of water supply, to judge)from the following which [appears as a looal in one of its daily papers:— Residents in the town who would prefer spring water to the highly flavored
liquid that is being supplied by the borough authorities, are direoted to an announcement in our *• Wanted " column.
The Napier Telegraph says" that the herd of red deer at Matapiro (Mr Shrimpton'a) Btation has grown to respectable dimensions, and has thrown out a branch family that has crossed the river and taken up its quarters on Mr B. D. M'Lean's, Maraekakaho country. The deer are very wild and keep on the high ranges.

A Wanganui paper reports that four Maori children were poisoned at Okato from the effeots ,of eating |tutu berrias. One of them is reported to have "turned almost black in
the face " before relief was obtained, the
other three being not quite so bad. An emetio oi Bait and water was administered, and all but one are now quite out of danger.
Fifteen years ago the buffalo ranges of Kansas and Colorado were covered with thousands of animals. The other day a party went over from Denver, and after a week's hunting managed to kill three from a herd of 29 they found in Lost Park. It is said that there are not more than 2000 buffaloes now
in existence. Systematic slaughter hai pro duoed this shameful result.
