TURNING OF THE FIRST SOD.

Grbymouth, January 24. An holiday is generally observed on account of tha turning of the first sod of the Midland Railway. A great many visitors are m town from Ghrlstchnroh, Hokitika, Boefton, and other places on the coast A special time table was prepared to-day between here and Brnnnerton. The sky was overcast but it was very warm.

The sod was turned at tha Junction, abont two miles above the Brnnnerton station, by the Hon. Mr Bioharditon, who congratulated the colony on having sooh a company to construct the line. He dwelt on tha strenuous opposition tho Government had to overoome before the line could be obtained. He considered it a red letter day m the annals of the colony.
