We are m receipt of a new weekly journal entitled Th« Otago Workman, published m South Dunedin, and with whioh is incorporated the Forbury New*.
Between 400 and 600 young salmon were successfully removed from the Oamaru Acclimatisation Sooioty's ponds on Saturday, and transferred to the Waitaki.
The programme for the meeting of the Ashbnrton Tradesmen's Baoing Glub, to be held on Maroh 8, appears m another column. An exoellent bill of fare has been provided, and granted favorable weather the meeting should prove a moßt sacoesßfal one.
The Auckland Hcraid says : — Among the Tauranga settlers at present m town is Mr John Ghadwiolc. Ha states that thousands of pounds' worth of orops are now m at Te Poke, principally maizt, oats, and potatoes. The volcanio deposit has been a great blessing m diiguUe, and the grass is all that oould be desired.
To-day the Ashburton Town Hall, with all the rights and appurtenances belonging thereto, was submitted to public auction by Mr F. 0. Tabart (m conjunction with Messrs Friedlander Bros.). The property was passed m at £850.
Russia's distinguished centenarian is Count Sergius Uvanoff, who was one of the Secretariea of the Russian Embassy m Paris m the first Napoleon's time. He is still robust, and with unolouded memory delights m telling of the mighty deeds of the heroes of seventyfive years ago.
The earth'i internal heat is now forced into praotioal Berries at Pesth, whero the deepest artesian well m the world is sunk to supply hot water for public baths and other purposes. A depth of 8120 feet has been reaohed, and the well suplies daily 176,000 gallons of water heated to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. The boring is to be oontinued until the temperature of the water is raised to 176 degrees.

A Committee meeting of the Ashburton Baoing Club was held on Saturday evening. Present— Messrs Purnell (ohairman), MoOwen, Denshire, Thomas, Leahy, and Friadlander. The following programme was adopted for the Autumn Meetiag :— First Day— District Hurdles, 20 hoys; Autumn Handicap, 50 bovb ; Foal Stakes, 15 boys ; Handioap Time Trot, 20 bovb ; Flying Handioap, 25 bovb ; Post Stakes, 10 sots. Second Day— District Welter Handioap, 20 boys ; Grand Stand Handioap, 40 bovb ; Handioap Time Trot, 15 sovb ; Harvest Handioap, SO aovs ; Novel Bact, 15 sovb; Consolation Handioap, 20 botb. Uesßra Purnell, Donßhire, Thomas, and the Storctary wore appointed a sub-committee wilh power to make arrangements for relettiog reserves for twelve months. The Committee than adjourned.
The South Cantsrbury Times learns that ft requisition is being prepared asking the Bey George Barolay to •ontest the Geraldine seat at the next general election.
A telegram m the Times calls ths attention of the British Government to a new petroleum tngine invented by Herr Siegfried Maroua, of Vienna, and whioh he is supplying to tha German navy for its torpedo boats, boats. The maohine is set m motion by •leotro-magnetißm. It has far more power than a steam engine of the Bruno sizn, ii lesfi liable to derangement, and is not aubjeot to explosions. Moreover, the fuel whioh feeds it takes up muoh less space than coal. All the experiments made with this engine have been satisfactory.
A daylight inspection parade of the Ashburton Bifles and Guards waß held at the Drillohed last evening. Thero were altogether present eighty members, a very creditable muster as harvesting is m full operation. The parade was under the command, of Major Douglas assisted by the Adjutant, Captain Fooks. Major Newall being the impeoting offioer. The ooeasion was taken advantage of to test the efficiency of newly elected offioera m the practical portion of their examination, which will be completed at Timaru next Thursday. The men were put through battalion drill by Capt Dolman, and company drill by Lieuts Sparrow, Dunn, and Muller, the last named being the candidates for commission. At the conclusion of the drill Major Newall informed the Volunteers' present that Color-Sergeant Hayes, of the Rifles, ;h»B be»n promoted to be SergeantMajor of the South Canterbury Battalion.
