LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr G. F. Scott has been eleoted President of the Ashburton Club.

There ia a decrease m tho rateable value of property m the borough of Oamaru compared with the previous valuation of something like £11,000,

Yesterday we had the pleasure of inspect- \ ing a sample of Ashburton jam, prepared by Mr William Baylis, grocer, East street. The jam waß of a rich flavor and nice color, and was made from fruit grown m this district. In faot everything m connection with it is produced m the district— tins, labeis, eto. We wish Mr Baylis c.very success m his new venture, and have no doubt, considering the quality of the article produced, that he will reap a well merited reward. At about four o'alook yesterday afternoon what easily might have proved a moat serious fire started m the corner of a paddook of wheat, on the Wakanni road, belonging to Mr Dalton, and quickly spread to the properties of Messrs Hoatten and John Ooohrane. Fortunately plenty of willing handa were available, and after a tough Btruggle the fire was extinguished, after doing but little damage to the grain, the most serious being to the fenoes. The fire at one time approached very near to Mr Hoatton'H house and Mr Goohrane'a wheat. A tent and some harvesting gear abont the camp at Dalton'a were destroyed. It is not known how the fire originated. At the B.M. Court this morning, before Major Steward, JP., s first offender for drunkenneea was mulored m the uaual penalty. An old man, who was too ill to appear, waa

remanded. A movement is on foot m Timara to form a new Woollen Factory Company to take over the business of the defunct oonoern. The Lyttelton Timet eaya that the boat take of th» season was made on Monday evening, at tht month of the Opibi, bj Mr N. 0. Nicholas, of Temnka, who grasied thirteen fish weighing 611bs. The fish were m fair oondition, bnt not particularly plump. All kindi of fish, bnt more particularly herrings, are very plentiful just now m the Milford lagoon, and good baskets are made almoit daily. Mr Angelo writes to the Lake County Press that having laid some pho&phorised grain for ) small birds m a shady place, one of his boya discovered some ten days afterwards that it , had set fire to a stook of oati, The outting of the grain had exposed the phosporiaed wheat to the sun's rays, and thus caused it to eet fire to the oats. Some of the mysterious fires whioh ooour m the country distriota = might be traced to some such. cause as this, A reoent telegram conveys the surprising m formation that the Sultan has issued orders that the Russian language is to be taught m f all eohoola tbroughont Turkey. i A ton of oheese aent from the Maungakara- ) mea (Whangarei) Oheese Factory to Brisbane i realised B|d per lb, leaving 7£ nett. , As ahowing what superior farming and a ] good soil will do, even m an unfavorable J season like the present, the Tvmaru Herald - is advised that a 27-aore paddook m the Comp. 1 Btall farm near town has threshed out 1122 - bushels rye-grass seed, or fully an average of ' 41£ bushels per aore, which is not bad con.' * sidering the long drought we have had. In lowa 955 women own and direot farms, " 18 direct stook-farma, 5 own greenhouses, 90 * manage market-gardens, 13 serve as county | superintendents, 37 manage intermediate in* ' stitutions of learning, 125 are physioianß, 49 | are registered pharmacists, 5 attorneys-at-law, * 10 ministers. 3 dentists, 110 professional ' nurses, and one is a civil engineer. ' In a gambling house m Mosoow the walla t and ceiling were covered with paper on whioh Btars were stamped. Among the stars m the ceiling holts were out, and a man lying on th 6 t floor m the room above saw the hands of those playing cards and telegraphed them, by t means of wires oonneoted with his shoes, to , his confederates. A shooking case of starvation is reported - from Eobuoa, m Victoria, where a poor woman - was discovered by a lady m a dying con- ; dition. She took the poor woman some assist* s ance, but it proved too late. It appears that I the unfortunate woman's husband has been [ away for some time, and her relatives living t olose by, although able to render assistance, r negleoted to do so, and she died absolutely I for the want of the neoessaries of life. The looal paper says that the rapidly ripen- ' ing fields throughout Wairaata county seem f to have attracted an innumerable army of » small birds, whioh are stripping the oorn, and J making great havoo m the fields. Wherever - a patch of grain is turning there they are m - myriads, and the damage done is very far '- from trifling. In faot, those crops wbioh are ■ Bomewhat earlier than the surrounding fields r - will lose a considerable percentage of the ' yield. A careful examination will show that ' the pest is very seriously injuring agricultural : enterprise, and more stringent measures for i its amelioration will soon have to be abopted. " Arrangement* for turning the first sod of ' the Midland Railway have jußt been com* ; pleted. The ceremony will take place on : Moniay at the junction of the Ohrißtohurch _■ and Nelson lines,, and half-a-mile from the ■ Brunnertoa Station. The sod will be turned ■ at throe o'olook m the afternoon by the Hon - Mr Richardson, and at 6.80 m the eveuia? cf 1 the Bame day a large company, probably 150, ' will participate m a banquet at the Volunteer ' Hall, Greymonth. The meeting will be representative ot the Coaßt, many invitations [ having been Bent to Westport, Hokitika, ' Reefton, and Nelson. ; It will rather surprise some people (say ; the Oamaru Mail) to learn that there ia a 600 aore paddook between Otepopo and [ Oamaru all m potatoes ; but, still more , wonderful, it is oomputed that between these » two places there is an area of 6000 acres m ; the same crop. Reckoning the yield at, say, . six tons to the aore this would mean 86,000 i tons. A large proportion of these potatoes ' have been put mby oroppers, who have leased ; the land at high prices, m some inßtantea at as much as 45s per aore. This is a terrible rent, and it ia fortunate for lessees that the crops are looking remarkably well. Purify the blood, cleanse the atomaoh, and sweeten the breath with Hop Bitters. Armeican 00. make the genuine. Read. The best medicine known ia Sander and Sons' Euoalypti Extraot. Test its eminen powerful eff sots m coughs, colds, influenza, etc — the relief is instantaneons. Thousands give the most gratifying testimony. His Majeßty the King of Italy and medical syndicates all over the globe are its patrons. Read the offioial reports that acoompa'ny eaoh : bottle. We have no oooasion to offer rewards ' m proof of the genuineness of our references. ' The offioial reports of medical olinias and ' universities, the offioial communication of the i Consul-General for Italy at Melbourne ; the 1 diploma awarded International Exhibition, I Amsterdam — all these are authentic doou- j merits, and, as such, not open to doubt. We ( idd here epitome of one of the various oases , treated at the olinio of Sohultz, M.D-, Pro. j lessor, eto: — "0.8., 24 years old; congestional absoeaa on the thigh. Inoisionß made m two , places. Although Lister's dressing was applied, the secretion beaame two days later, ' very copious, and had adopted a foetid, de- < composed character. The temperature rose ' enormously. In consequence the dressing i was removed, and on its place were made 1 during the daytime repeated irrigations with I Eucalypi Extraot. The offensive foeter dia> { appeared very soon, the fever abated within c a few days, and the patient recovered after i;ho lapse of several weeks. In this instance we must not lose sight of the faot that the latter treatment saved the patient's life-- 3 fAdvt.] . 1 1
