A NARROW ESCAPE.
The Hangitikei Advocate reports that a serious collision waß avertedjby a " mere flake " (using the term of some of fhn passengers) n few evetinpe ago. As the Wanganai train, due at Marton at 6 30, on me through what is known bb "Gawer'a Omting." near Bennie Glen, the engine of the ballad traok, the driver of whioh must have been considerably out of his reckoning, went by tha Bonnia Glen station, and where he intended to pasa the Wanganul down train goodness knowß. The Wanganai train jast oamo ryund the cutting as the ballast engine came up the inclina ; and the engines wore within a few feet of each othei when the ballast engine rerersed and ran back «gftin to the Bonnie Glen Btation. Had tho Wanstanui train been a few minut.es ]ater ; and both engines met on the Turakioft hill, there would havo been undoubtedly n very cerioas accident.
