UNKNOWN ISLANDS IN THE PACIFIC.
0 Tbe fact that two islands of consider able size have recently bean discovered m the Pacific Ocean Bhows that we have yet muoh to learn of thia great watery expanae. The latest diaoverj ia au island lying lens than 100 mi es from the northern coast of New Guinea. It has ' been named Allison Island, ia nearly throe miles lcng, rises from 100 to 150 feet above the sea, and has abuudant timber. ' Several specks of fertile and inhabited l*nd, some of them much larger than Allison Island, have been found within a ' few years at a distance of one hundred to ' two or three hundred milea from the ' New Guinea coast, and similar diocovarlea ' ate made once m a while m various parts of tha Pacific . Oceanic^ is so large that no map of it ' can be given m an atlas except on a minute scale. We see hundreds of groups acid solitary ialands huddled together on the maps and *et the idea that tho Pacific is tbiokly ntadded with verdant land. The fact m, however, that vessels may 1 sail amoog iheae ialar.da for many w.^eks without once coming m B : ght o| land. . Only a few months ago a crow that had been shipwrecked m the great island region of the Pacific rowed north for forty ' daya before they reached Hawaii, the ' nearest land. Mr A. R, Wallaoo, who ' has travelled widely m the Pacific, ex- ' pressed the opinion aome time ago that ' there are at ill a good many islands there ' that have never yet been seen by white ' man. ' Once m a while a Pacifia trader finds ' gome new or little known lataad, and ' opens trado with Us inhabitants. Jf \ bqainesa thrives, he keeps his secret ' as long as ho oan, ao as to enjoy a ' monopoly. It wan f ucd a while ago, ' when ih» Woodlatk Islands we re explored, ' that an Australian firm bad carefally ' charted the islands several years before, ; and bad been quietly trading there, all < nnknown to the other Pacific mere hanta.
