Auckland, January 12. A destructive bush fire is reported to have been raging m Te Punui buah for nearly a week past, Tt commenced m the Mangawa foreßt and is travelling In a westerly dlrcoiion, a large quantity of valuable standing timber being burned, and buah men have had to leave their wharea and take to the open. \ number of bush contractors have met with serious loss from the ore. It is stated that many valuable working bullocks have been destroyed m the fhraes.

Wellington, January 12. At a special meeting of the Wellington Gas Company a resolution to inorenae the capital to £200,000, by the creation of 10,000 new shares afc £10 each was carried. Tho Chairman stated it was the intention of the Company to greatly mc ease their buainesn.

Mr Jellicoo, ■olicitor, to-day swore un information against John Peate (representins; himself as a Scottiah solicitor) for haviDg threatened to take his (Jallicoe'a) life, saying he would •' knifo " him. 1 During a recent oaae, m which Feate was defendant, he was subjected to a savere cross-examination by Mr Jellicoe. He 1b now undergoing imprisonment for debt, but trill be brought before the Magistrate when released. Dunbdin, Jannary 12. At a meeting of shareholders m Keaat audJMuOarchy'*, Limited, brewers, the Ohairmim stated that the losses wera nearly all attributed to bad purchases made by the original owners of the brewery. It was agreed to appoint Bomeone outside to investigate affairs. At a meeting of tha Presbyterian Synod, the report on the state of religion stated that while the nnmber of communicant? on the rolls showed an inoreaso of 600, there was really a decrease of about 100 It stated that either the rolla were badly kept, o? there was an alarming process of lapsing from membership. At the evening sitting a motion was carried that a loyal addres3 be presented to the Queen on the occasion of her jubilee, aud to the Governor on his present visit. Two applications were reoeivod for the position of Theological Professor, ar>d the Key. John Dunlop, M.A., Dundee, was appointed. The other candidate was the Rev. Mr Fiulayson, of Bluoskin.

At the Supreme Court, m the cage John Ke'so v Petera and Mcßrearty, a claim for £200 damages, the statement of claim set forth that plaint; if, a ploughman at Eaßt Taieri, on November 6th, 1885, employed defendants (Peters, a chemist, and JMoßearty, a medical practitioner) to extract from him a decayed tooth; that defendants as negligently and unskilfully went to work- that they extracted a sound tooth and broke the plaintiff's lower jaw, whereby ha had Buffered, and will suffer, great" pain and incurred medical and other expenses, and was unable to work for a long time, to hu serioua loss and damage. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £5.

Invbrcakoill, January 12. The Rev J. .Dowie closed his faith-heal-ing mission here to-night, when ten persons testified to having raceived phyßicil benefit through his agency.
