WAKANUI ROAD BOARD
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wnkanui Rood Board was held-at tho Board's Office, Moore street, on Saturday lant. Present— Mesa™ W. Bruce (ohairzuan), W. T. Lill, James Brown, and G. Cole. Letters were read — (1) From County Council inviting the members of the Board and the Surveyor to an inepcotion of the Wakanui bulwark, with referenda to the addition to the same. — The Survnjor Btated the matter was dealt with m the report —(2) From Mr N. Fitzgerald applying for an exten. eion of time m connection with bi3 oontraot at Fairfield road. — Au extension of ten days w&b granted. PROPOSED KllW ROAD. Mr W. Jameson waited on the Board with reference to the resolutions passed at the last meeting. Ha complained that the proposed new road would out up his land m awkward pieces. If the rou3 vrore taken along tho west boundary of his land he would not object, and if the Board fell m with bis viewß, he would, m the meantime, allow Messrs Wilson and Adams sooess through his paok> dook. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Brown, " That the Board having heard Mr Jameson, agrees with his suggestion that the line of road be taken along Mr Thomas's boundary, and that the Surveyor communioate with Messrs Thomas and Wilson on the matter" It was also resolved that the members for No. 2 Ward be a Bub-committee to carry out all details m connection with the new road. The Surveyors' report was read as follows : — (1) River Road Protective Works: By invitation of the Committee of the Oountj Council we inspeoted these works with them, with a view of endeavouring to protect the encroachment below. the bulwark; though nothing definite will' be arranged till the .Council meets, it was suggested to erect a fence of iron rails and wire for a distance o! about live or six obains beyond the bulwark, we believe this will have the desired' effeot and will also be economical, the oost would be about £60.— (2^ Fitzgerald* Road: T,h« metalling of this road has been completed. —(3) Plantation Reserve : We hare inspected the reserve from whiob, at last meeting, It was reported that wire had been taken—the top wire on the north side has been taken away by the party who ereoted the fenoe, they considering they had a right to it, there is a good gorse fenoe on this boundary so the wire is really not needed. We are not aware that the Board contributed towards the cost of ereoting the fence. The other fenoea oh he reserve are m good order.— (4) Proposed New Road : As Mr Jameson desires to interview the Board before the proceedings decided at last meeting are commenced, we have re. framed from taking any steps m the matter. — (5) Closing Trevurza'a Road : A meeting of ratepayers was held at the Wakanui Sohoolroom on the 29th ult. to decide on the dosing of the road, but there was but little interest shown, only three ratepayers being present besides the member of the Bjard, (Mr Brown, who presided.) A resolution was carried by two to one that the road be closed. —(6) Fairfield Road: The contractor for metalling this road, let at last meeting, had not, up to the time for completing the oontract, commenced work; notice has, therefore, been sent him terminating bis contract and forfeiture of deposit.— (7) Seaside Road : The. por ion of the fenoe not properly levelled at last meeting has been finished, without the Board putting ie labour.— (B) Gorse on Roads : We have invited tenders for cutting fenoes and grubbing up gorse on some of the roada m No. 8 Ward, the oooupiers having negleoted to do so, though publio notioe was given some time ago. Other parts of the district will" also reoeive attention.— (9) Maintenance: The maintenance man has been engaged m making fords on Fiszgerald's road, h atbam's road* and other work ; bis diary lies on the table. Clause 1.-The matter was left m the hands of the member** of No. 2 Ward to take any aotion they may deem neoessary. Clause s.— Mr Brown moved, the Chairman seconded, and it waß carried, " That the })lans of the proposed road to be stopped be aid before the County Connoil at its next meeting, and that the Surveyor be instructed to attend the meeting of the Oounoil m order to answer any objections that may be made to the stopping of the road."
TEKDERS. The tender of J. T. Robinson, for gores grubbing on Fairfleld road, at la 3d per ohain was aooeptcd. GULL*. The Surveyor was instructed to have poata and rails erected on gaily on Beaoh toad, opposite tho Wesleyar. Chapel, PAYMENTS. After passing aooounts for payment tha Board adjourned.
