COST OF THE AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON.

A letter from the Commander- n-Cnief of the Aus-raliin squadron is published living tor* cost of the Außtralim squadron «8 foil iws : — H'Bt'muted first cost to the ttritisii tax puyor of the vessels composing 'ho Australian squadron, viz , Nelson, Diamond, Opal, Miraada, Haven, Swinger, Undine, and Harrier, at £840,124; estimated nnnunl coat of the abovenamed vessels, including cost of relieving crews, £237,512. This'is exclusive of the cost of the • depot at Sydney and of administration charges. Six surveying vessels, m addition to above, are empioytd on the station. The entire charges due to four of them are borne by th«* Admiralty, and m case of the other two the cost is shared between the Admiralty and Queensland m one case, and b tween the Admiralty and Western Australia m theofer. Since the return was m-de, H M.S. Miran-'a, Commander Rooke, has been replaced by H M.S. Rapid, Capt. Musgrave, a more costly vessel, with a modern armament.
