London. Jannaty 3. The leadership of the House . of Commons has not been offered to Mr Goschen as previously reported. He has, however, been offered the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer, which office both the Marquis of Harrington and Mr Chamberlain urged him to accept. Mr Chamberlain is endeavoring to bring about a reunion between the followers of Mr Gladstone and the Unionist Liberals.

A lette- by Mr Gladstone is published m this morning's papers, m which he states he appreciates the motives that caused Lord R. Churchill to resign. He urges Liberals to adhere to their present policy while seeking an opportunity for the reunion of the different sections of the party.
